Children go through developmental stages that end up to define their personality. The formative years are the most delicate in children since it is within these years that they undergo rapid development. At three years, children have already mastered imitation of adult characters and have either formed or are in the process of developing perceptions of the world around them. One of the most critical of their developmental aspects during these years is the ability to subordinate motives and establish ethical instances (Bissoli, 2014). When children at this delicate stage are subjected to acting in films that depict criminality and savage characters, their perceptions of ethics and motives become altered. I believe this action may result in a change of personality in children and distort their perception of the films' criminal activities, thus immoral.
However, these storylines are often depicted from true stories, thus necessary in educating children and serve as a platform to educate them on possible encounters in their lives. Despite the positive intention in the films, morality still lacks since the adverse effects in the development of children are independent of the factual of the fictional aspect of the films. According to Shao and Wang (2019), violent video games are just as destructive as children's participation in criminal films. In a study to determine the effect of violent video games carried out at the Research Institute of Moral Education, Nanjing Normal University, Shao and Wang conclude that exposed children showed positive correlations to normative perceptions about aggression. These effects were most pronounced from the adolescent stage. The ethical theory of utilitarianism would find violent video games and children's involvement in criminal films as immoral. This theory advocate's for happiness and pleasure in place of unhappiness and harm. Violent games and criminal films are full of scenes which show portray harm and end up harming children's personality, thus going against the utilitarianism theory.
