Lisa Nichol’s Seminar How to be a world-class speaker that can truly move an audience is motivational and moving. At the beginning of the speech, the main thought in my mind was how long the seminar was and whether I would have the patience to follow through with it all. Within a few minutes, I had already lost track of the time and completely engrossed in a story about a boy dropping a toy. Nichol was not only teaching about moving an audience but also moving her audience. The way the speech was conducted from a verbal and non-verbal communication perspective was a live manifestation of the message she was teaching. Eventually, the lesson was not only taught but also shown in practice. It is on this basis that I consider the seminar motivational, enlightening and moving.
There were several novel and practically applicable ideas emanating from watching the seminar. The first was the fact that there is a difference between telling a story and showing a story. A story that is already well known can be told in a way that it is both heard and seen. When that happens, it becomes very moving and also very convincing. The second new idea was that the expert on any product is not the manufacturer by the consumer, so a good producer should learn how to listen to the consumer. The greatest message, however, was the part of the message in the mind when carrying out an activity and the impact it has on how the activity is carried out. The illustration for the message was how Nichol broke the swimming record because she kept reminding herself that “ winners never quit ” as opposed to the message she was used to “ I don’t want to lose ”. The positive message inspired her to success yet, swimming is mainly a physical activity.

I would recommend this video to any person who would want to be a world-class speaker based on the lessons it carries. For a start, having watched the video, I did not just learn a lot about being a good speaker but also had an experience about the impact of listening to a world-class speaker. The combination of watching Nichol speak and listening to her words has a greater impact than reading a manual about speaking or learning about it in another way. The cues about non-verbal communication, connecting with the audience and taking command of the stage can only best be learned through observation. It is the combination of what one can see in the video and what the speaker is saying that would inform my recommendation of the video to anyone who wishes to become a world-class speaker.
As a consequence of watching the seminar, I would want to be a world-class speaker and motivate, inspire, and move people with my words. Journalism is all about communication and getting a good story would be in vain unless it can also be told in the right way. Being a world-class speaker does not necessarily mean being able to speak on a world-class stage as it also means making the best out of every opportunity to communicate. I believe being a world-class speaker would make me more effective in my career. Further, after watching the video I have realized that it is possible, with proper motivation and effort to make a career out of speaking to people, in groups or even individually. I would, therefore, want to put in the necessary effort to develop world-class speaking skills.
