Education in its two facets, as a teacher and a learner, is a lifelong process. The events are intertwined and go beyond the confinement of a classroom, lecture hall, practical set-up, and e-learning to education in nature and so on. In my Emergency Medical Services field, the concept allows me to remain open minded to lessons that I can pick from interaction with people and the environment in outside classroom events. Such occasions provide viable possibilities of learning personal limitations and strengths as well as applying lessons learned in other areas. Therefore, this philosophy helps me to integrate lessons learned in other areas into others based on their relevance thereby creating a complete image of the purpose of education.

Secondly, my educational philosophy is built on the principle that students have varied learning abilities. While offeringEmergency Medical Services, I am self-propelled to pursue my education to the best of my abilities. Similarly, as a teacher, I am prepared to approach each student based on their potentials by focusing on their individual and group strengths. The benefit of this philosophy is its ability to minimize self-incrimination from failures especially after putting enough effort; it also prevents the subjection of students with weaker abilities in one area into unnecessary condemnation. Its essence is its ability to enhance one's self-acceptance as well as the appreciation of others.

The third fundamental position is the belief in the role of the environment in the learning process. The environment must be arranged to provide an ambient atmosphere for learning and teaching. The tone and mood of the environment must be appropriate for the intended study. The environment includes the structures put in place to enhance learning, the level of noise and silence that will minimize interruption, and organization of the study area. Other significant elements of the environment include the people with whom one interacts with who may come from various diversities and teacher-student interaction that can allow for critic without hurting the other. Some of these elements can only be achieved in controlled environments as compared to free space learning where the teacher and the learner have little or no control.

From this brief analysis, my philosophy on education is constructed around on three exceptional opinions that make up the whole; learning has no end, abilities influence learning outcomes and that the environment is a confounding factor in attempting to achieve a successful learning outcome and therefore must be taken seriously as a key ingredient.

Translation into Teaching Methodology

The main purpose of having personal philosophy is to create direction for the teacher as well as a role model to the learners. Through philosophy, I can occupy both the teacher and student capacities. At a personal level, I acquire strength and direction in determining information that I should seek based on its relevance and maximize my performance by focusing on my strengths. The philosophy enables me to design programs and assessments that will meet the need of every EMS student.

An effective EMS educator should possess attributes that will attract students to him and create confidence in them about their teacher's abilities. For instance, he should display knowledge and competence in the field. This relates to the amount of information and expertise one can share with his students. The teacher should excel in these qualities and offer assistance that suppresses the student's expectations in most cases. Also, the educator should be willing to learn and self-correct especially when the point of correction arises from the students. This should be displayed in pure humility. Finally, the educator should express emotional intelligence and resilience. He should not burst at every mistake, challenge, and failure but instead should have the will to bounce back and get matters in control.
