Being an engineer is basically ability to solve problems. One can read the manuals and come up with solutions, systems maintenance to enhance survival. The achievements by the Martian are remarkable given the little he had to work with from rations to sustaining life support for him and the plants. It is a good achievement even though fiction in nature.

The ethics as portrayed in the book portray the disregard for human life for the advancement of scientific discoveries. Sending a person in an expedition that may cost human life are as equal to signing a death sentence for them. NASA should have sent a rescue mission since they anticipated for mission failure and they can’t say they are absolutely sure for a mission success. It is prudent that they should have planned for a recovery mission in the event that there are survivors after a mission failure
