Following the empty safe in the president’s office at Uptown Department Store, I have a lot to do to make sure I get to the bottom of it. First, I have to weigh my options. Is it theft, or is it fabricated for the insurance money? If it is indeed theft, who would have access to the safe, and how would they open it? How many people know the passcode to the safe? And how many have the motive to steal from it? I need to assess the value of the safe contents and how the thief may use it. It could be an inside job, given that there is no use of force or violence. The safe was not broken into, meaning the person who opened it knew the passcode. However, that does not rule out the possibility of it being a skilled burglar who is not necessarily part of the organization.
I will need to check for prints; they may have been reckless enough to leave some. I will also need to check the CCTV footage for any clues. If that proves futile, I will have to interrogate anyone who may be a person of interest in the case, while treading carefully not to alarm the culprit into flight. The president himself will be an excellent place to start. I will need a list of anyone with motive and access. If the contents of the safe can be tracked, I will be in luck. I will look for potential buyers for the contents and use the trail the burglar will leave to catch them. Although I am determined to catch the person responsible for the empty safe, I will have to make peace with myself if they elude me.
