The National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is one of the largest organizations for professional workers in the universe. The primary purpose of the body is to promote the professional growth and development of its members. Other roles of NASW are to develop, implement, and maintain professional standards for social workers and ensure that members adhere to sound social policies. NASW Code of Ethics values guides how social workers should behave with respect to various principles. I decided to be a social worker to provide services to those in need of assistance in different aspects of their lives. The NASW Code of Ethics value of service influenced my decision to become a social worker.

The photograph above represents the value of service in a very powerful and unique way. I chose it since it captures the essence of reaching out to another person, lending a helping hand; core elements of being a social worker. The NASW Code of Ethics (2008) provides various ethical principles that guide social workers. One value that the body addresses is service, and this provides that the primary goal of social workers is to assist those individuals in need and address social problems (Socialwork.sdsu.edu, 2019). Here (in the photograph), the person on the left extends a helping hand, allowing the other to stretch out and accept assistance. There is a feeling of trust, calm, and assurance, assisted by the posture of the hand reaching out o help, and the overall colors of the clouds. Helping other people brings about these feelings; where one individual assures another and the other is relieved, confident, happy, and hopeful once more. Moreover, the image is simple, whereby no material benefits are realized for the person extending help by, for example, having his other hand accepting money: This shows selflessness. The NASW Code of Ethics (2008) encourages social workers to volunteer their professional skills to help others without expecting anything in return ((Socialwork.sdsu.edu, 2019). Thus, my determination to volunteer to serve others and solve social problems influenced my intention of becoming a social worker.

In conclusion, the NASW Code of Ethics (2008) provides various values guiding its members. The value of service significantly influenced my decision to become a social worker as realized in the photograph. I believe that through this career, I will assist people in need and be able to solve social problems.
