First Step in Student’s Guide to Research

The first step in research is to frame the research question. Framing the research question is important because it narrows down to the particulars and critical aspects of the research. A research question such as ‘’what are the health effects of excessive smoking?’’ can be effectively answered using studies and scientific research. The research question prepares the researcher to tackle the issues at hand by developing the hypothesis.

Defining the First Step of Research

The first step of research is identifying the problem. The problem in research includes the questions that need to be answered to come up with meaningful conclusions. A problem must be specific and clear to avoid ambiguity and redundancy during research.

Assumptions and Bias of the Drug Industry Underlying Drug Research

The first major assumption and bias in drug research are created by medical literature that may result in readers consuming unsound and misleading information. This type of bias is referred to as a written word bias. Reading the articles can lead to a second major type of bias known as authority bias. This type of bias gives the readers a perception that the content in the material is entirely objective. It is also vital to note that when drug companies research on drugs, they can give a confounding and favorable outcome that make their products look better. Also, the consumers can have considerable influence on the research.

Personal Bias

The personal bias that I have to the influence of the drug industry over research is based on the pharmaceutical experts. My strongest belief is that these professionals have the sole moral and professional authority with regards to giving information on the suitability of the drug. However, pharmaceutical companies can as well conceal important details about their drugs which have a potential effect on my health. Therefore this bias prevents me from being vigilant and inquisitive on the products I use.
