Australian motivational speaker and author, Nicholas James Vujicic, has struck international headlines in the past for his excellent approach in life despite being born with a rare condition (Haziq, 2016). I heard about Nick’s story roughly two years ago through the media, and his approach in life confirms the theory on achieving inner contentment from the reading by Howard C. Cutler. Nicholas was born with the tetra-amelia syndrome, a condition characterized by the absence of arms and legs (Haziq, 2016). The author and motivational speaker was born in Melbourne Australia in 1982 to two parents who were Serbian immigrants from Yugoslavia. In his autography, Nick writes that his mother refused to hold or even see him after he was born because of his rare condition. However, the parents soon accepted the reality and termed it as “God’s plan for their son”.

It is hard to imagine how life would become if one would not have arms and legs. One would not be able to walk, engage in basic activities, or even embrace loved ones. Even for Nick, his situation was difficult at the beginning since he had to deal with depression and loneliness (Haziq, 2016). He questioned his purpose in life and why he looked different compared to other children. However, Nick soon practiced the art of inner contentment and refused to allow his physical condition to limit his lifestyle. As a result, he overcame his struggles and rose to become successful despite his physical disability. Vujicic attributes his main source of encouragement to his belief in God and has since gone around the world preaching about the Bible and Jesus Christ. Nick is just a young man but has achieved much more than what most people achieve in a lifetime (Haziq, 2016). I am deeply convinced that inner contentment matters in life based on the fascinating story of Nicholas Vujicic.

Question 2

There are sparking similarities between Dalai Lama’s view and J. Cole’s view since they encourage people to be grateful with what one has instead of envying the flashy life of a next-door neighbor. Dalai Lama states that, “if you live in a poor village in India where you can manage quite well without buying a car but you still desire one, even if you have the money to buy it, it can ultimately bring trouble” (Lama, 2009). The false sense of satisfaction a person feels after acquiring material things such as money and property will only plant greed and the need to want even more. A person may then reach a limit of what they can ever get and at that point, reality strikes in. The person would probably lose hope and sink into depression.

The title of J. Cole’s video “Love Yourz” suits his message since many are times people desire to be like others and rarely think about being thankful for the little that they have. With the growth of social media platforms such as Instagram, more young people are desiring to acquire the status of various celebrities who post pictures of their fancy lifestyles from time to time. Many of them even decide to look for shortcuts to obtaining money and fame, which could be damaging to their lives at the end. J. Cole advises such desperate folk that “there is no such thing as life that is better than yours”, meaning that everyone is significant and should be contented however small one’s achievements may appear ( Parkkerr, 2015) .
