An obstruction is simply a distraction or anything that closes up and prevents passage using an obstacle. Self-storage facilities have gained popularity over the past few years because of their consistent growth. This, therefore, means that they occupy most new buildings thus posing a new challenge for firefighters. This is because these large storage facilities are public warehouses where most people check in to store unchecked materials and this means that firefighters cannot predict what kind of hazards to expect. Obstruction is one of the main hazards that could prevent firefighters from doing their jobs (Tsiftes, Dunkels, He & Voigt, 2009, April). These obstructions are mainly caused by the accumulation of materials around locations that are easily flammable or by the accumulation of flammable materials on one point. For example, the accumulation of wood or plastic materials can very easily cause fires. In order to prevent fire outbreaks in such a situation, construction debris needs to be carefully disposed of. More so, doors to such open storage facilities are usually located in corridor openings, stairwells, and storage rooms thus if obstructions are found in the such opening, firefighters will not get to the scene in time and the building will automatically burn down. In addition, such obstructions are bound to block the notification system thus it becomes difficult for firefighters to get signals of fire breakouts. However, if the notification system was not blocked, firefighters usually get the information in real-time and they immediately appear on the scene to react to the fire. On the other hand, should the notification system fail and a fire breaks out, there is no way the firefighters will get to the scene immediately and this poses a lot of danger to the public properties stored in the storage facility (Ergen, Akinci, East & Kirby, 2007 ). More so, there are a lot of costs associated with a fire breakout.
