Summary of Articles

Park, Cho, and Hong (2015) set out to establish the pervasiveness of workplace violence aimed at nurses and also to identify who are the people responsible for such offences. The trio also examined the connection of occupation exigencies, trust and justice within the workstation assisted with the existence of violence. Park, Cho, and Hong found out that the prevalence and the architects of violence sharply contrasted within nursing units. In addition, the trio also established that greater job requirements and less conviction and justice are associated with nurses’ encounters with violence. On their side, Turk, Fapohunda, and Zoucha were determined to study the practices and opinions of Nigerian immigrants to the United States regarding physical activity and eating regimes. Turk, Fapohunda, and Zoucha were also interested in establishing how Nigerian immigrants’ cultural dogmas impacted their position on eating and physical activity. In addition, the trio was also focused on exploring how healthcare providers can help advance physical activity and healthy eating, and also assess the viability and the effectiveness of employing Photovoice in the collection of information regarding the perceptions and the customs of Nigerian immigrants concerning physical exercise/ activity and healthy eating. The study outcomes revealed that Photovoice is indeed a useful tool for collecting data regarding the practices and the perceptions of Nigerian immigrants. The study also publicized that the participants in the research upheld that sticking to traditional activities and customary dietary routines is healthy, and that there is need for nurses and other healthcare providers to communicate with and enlighten Nigerian immigrants on healthy eating habits as well as activity behaviors within their cultural setting.

The article by Turk, Fapohunda, and Zoucha hints at concerns about eating and physical activities of Nigerian immigrants to the United States. There is trepidation that the immigrants’ customs as well as lifestyle behaviors could be affecting their eating habits and level of indulgence in physical activities. As a strategy to addressing this concern, Turk, Fapohunda, and Zoucha resorted into using photovoice methodology to help collect data so as to authenticate how the immigrants’ cultural beliefs impact their eating regimes and participation in physical exercise; hence, influencing their health outcomes. Establishing the influence of the immigrants’ customary beliefs on eating activities and participation in physical exercise is also seen as a way of creating an avenue for intervention.

Purpose Statement

To establish the occurrence and the culprits of violence against nurses at their workstations and to establish the relationship of job wants and truth and justice within a workplace that is prone to violence (Park, Cho & Hong, 2015).

The purpose of the study by Turk, Fapohunda, and Zoucha is to study the perceptions as well as practices of Nigerian immigrants to America concerning physical activity and healthy eating, and also to gage how these cultural beliefs affect the eating and physical activity of the immigrants. The article also intends to evaluate the severity of the situation so as to necessitate intervention strategies as well as testing the reliability and accuracy of photovoice in collecting data on the practices and practices of Nigerian immigrants regarding physical activity and eating habits.

Hypothesis/ Research Questions

Is the prevalence of workplace violence uniform across all nursing units? And is greater work demands, less trust and minimal justice at the workplace related with nurses’ encounter with violence at the workstation? (Park, Cho & Hong, 2015).

Does the Nigerian immigrants’ cultural beliefs and practices influence their stand on dietary and physical activities? And is photovoice a reliable and effective methodology of collecting data regarding the practices and perceptions of Nigerian immigrants on diet and physical exercise? (Turk, Fapohunda & Zoucha, 2015).

The study by Park, Cho, and Hong is relevant to the nursing practice since it is aimed at improving the working environment for nurses through creation of a trustworthy and just atmosphere within the healthcare facilities and also my minimizing job pressure on nurses. A healthy working environment in healthcare is essential for improving patient outcomes and also boosting the morale, performance of healthcare providers. It is also important for employee retention (Russell, Anstey & Wells, 2015).

The recent surge in the number of immigrants and especially of African descent into the United States has made it a priority to keep this group of people healthy. The article by Turk, Fapohunda, and Zoucha in this capacity therefore aims at exploring how the culture of the immigrants could render them prone to infections since culture influences quite a number of things; eating and engagement in physical activity included. Healthy eating and exercising is key to healthy living.

Details to Support the Researches as Qualitative or Quantitative

The research by Park, Cho, and Hang is a quantitative research. The experiment is number based, has got fixed response options, is easily generalizable, is both objective and conclusive, and is aimed at raising numerical data and hard facts by recruiting statistical, mathematical and logical technique. On the other hand, the study conducted by Turk, Fapohunda, and Zoucha is qualitative research. Here, data is text based (pictures), has semi-structure response options, is less generalizable, is subjective and exploratory, and is aimed at developing an understanding on human and social sciences, and also to establish how people think and feel (“Differences between qualitative and quantitative research methods,” n.d, “Characteristics of qualitative research,” 2019, and “Characteristics of quantitative research,” 2019).
