Taking a look at the stage gate process, it a technique used to manage projects especially projects that are intended to improve the performance of a company. The stage gate process is divided into several stages whereby each stage depends on the success of the previous stage. We are going to analyze the stage gate process of Blattner energy, and in this case, the company focuses on developing important stages in the construction circle. The phases are used as a plan to accomplish the client’s service. The stages begin from stage 0 to stage 5 which are; discovery, scoping, business plan concept, development, testing and validation and launch and implementation (Chao, Lichtendahl Jr, & Grushka‐Cockayne, 2014) .
Stage 0-discovery; this is the initial stage in the gate process; it entails all the preparation done regarding a project to be accomplished. Stage 1-scoping; this stage involves evaluation of the project and how it will be beneficial to the company and also the market. The stage analyses the service form the competitors and use the information to develop the best strategies that will put the company ahead of its competitors. Stage 2-business plan concept; this involves the development of a business plan, in this case, the company will concentrate on defining the product or service, developing a business plan and creating the project plan. Stage 3-development; this is the implementation stage where the plans in the previous stage are put into action, and testing is done to ensure credibility. Stage 4-testing and validation; when the plan has been accomplished, testing and validation will be done where the product or service will be examined on how it will be embraced by the customers. The stage entails; testing for production errors, testing in the field and obtaining responses from the different participant and market testing. Stage 4-launching and implementation; this is the last stage where the project has been accomplished, and the company organizes to launch it so that potential customers will have access to the product or service.
In regards to the stage gate process, we are going to look at the main phases in Blattner Energy. The company accomplishes the renewable energy construction process in five phases. The first phase is pre-construction(discovery); this is the first phase where the company focuses on aspects such as surveying the place where construction will take place, this enables the constructors to determine the environmental factors that could inhibit construction. The pre-construction phase also includes land use optimization, permitting procurement and geotechnical investigation. This about the fists stage which is discovery is clear that the company focus on discovering the place of construction, the land, and the surrounding environment before it commences on the construction process (O'Connor, 1994) .
The second phase is Engineering and design (scoping); this phase is critical because it involves the area of expertise expected to accomplish the construction project and deliver according to the desires of the clients. The engineering and design consist of civil engineering which is a field that specializes in assessing and construction of roads. Electrical engineering is also another area that specializes in all matter related to electricity and energy and lastly, the geotechnical field which deals with all the technical matters in renewable energy. The company will focus on hiring a highly qualified team of engineers who will be able to deliver satisfactory service to the clients. In this stage, the design of the construction will be compared to those of the competitors and development will be made to ensure that the company offers the best design as compared to that of a competitor.
Material procurement is the third phase of the company (business plan concept); this is a phase that involves the collection of all the materials necessary for the construction. This is a very important phase because it forms the basis for the onset of the construction process. In this phase, there are various activities that will take place which is; transportation, receiving and inspecting all the materials, storage, and inventory control. The company will ensure that all the material to be used in construction is available before execution of the plan. The business plan concept will involve; defining all the materials to be used and how to be used, developing a plan on how the construction will be initiated and merging the plan with the procured materials to determine the loopholes and developing a timeline that will foresee the whole implementation process.
Construction is the fourth phase (development); this phase is the center of all the above phases because it is the main reason for the above phase. It is the implementation stage, where construction will take place. Construction takes place to meet the client’s demand. In this phase the company through a team of experts will perform the following; foundation installation, mechanical or turbine installation, electrical collection system, installation of transmission lines, construction of substations, installation of communication networks and commission through testing. It is the developmental stage where construction will commence with the aim of meeting the requirements of the client
Construction management is the last phase (testing, validation, and launching); on this phase, the company has already accomplished its construction and will require a management team that will ensure that the process was complete and ready for the clients. The construction team will also undertake the testing and validation process which is a requirement to ensure that the project is valid and credible for the client. After testing and validation, the company will accredit the site as safe for use. After that, there will be an official launch on the use of the service, in this case, the energy sector will accredit the project, and in partnership with the company, the client will be granted the permission to begin using the renewable energy (Cooper et al., 2008)
