The article cannot be classified as a research work but rather a Quality Improvement project. The conclusion is based on the fact that the objective of the project is to bridge the gap that exists between best practice and actual practice in using atypical antipsychotic agents in treating emotional, behavioral, and mental health problems in adolescents as well as children. This project is a qualitative study noting that it is aimed at improving the quality of care through adhering to the screening guidelines that have been recommended in psychiatric mental health care including blood pressure, fasting glucose and lipids, family and personal history, and waist circumference as well as body weight.

Significance and uniqueness

The study project can be rated as very good in uniqueness and significance noting that it will provide education to the mental health practitioners as a measure of increasing adherence to the recommended screening for risk factors that are accompanied by the use of atypical antipsychotic agents thus improving the client care outcomes. Consistency with NINR Research priorities

While basing on the NINR research priorities, the quality improvement project can be rated as very good. The conclusion is based on the fact that undertaking mental health practitioners’ education on the guidelines for screening and implementing adopted checklist has the potential of reducing the cost of care, promoting care outcomes and improving quality of nursing practice in mental health, especially for children and adolescents.

Soundness of study methods

The quality improvement project utilizes a very good study and analysis methods. As indicated, the study has been implemented in a mental health center that provides care services to children as well as adolescents making it an appropriate place where the study objectives can be achieved. Furthermore, using convenience sampling will prove essential in reducing the cost of undertaking the study as well as creating ease in accessing the selected samples. As such, the method will yield quality results which otherwise would not have been possible with other sampling techniques.

The study’s rationale and background can be rated as good given that the project has identified the child mental health as the process to be improved and adequate organization in providing education to mental health nurses on the need for adhering to the screening guidelines. Most notably the theory of change can be rated as very good for use in this project since it indicates the need for implementing the screening guidelines for quality outcomes. Furthermore, using child and adolescent psychiatrists as well as the psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners is very appropriate since they will are responsible for ensuring adherence to the guidelines. However, the timeline for the project needs to be adjusted to ensure adequate coverage of the project and allowing a large sample to be used. Additionally, the project does not precisely include the resources that are required to make the project successful.

Feasibility of the study

Despite the study potentially holding a breakthrough for the treatment of adolescents and children with mental health, the project may not be completely feasible notably due to the time limitation. Additionally, the sample size has been noted as being considerably small lacking a control group to act as a benchmark for the project, therefore, completing it in the future will require a longer time and a larger sample size.

The potential for future research and funding

The quality improvement project poses as one having good potential for future research and funding. As such, improvements can be made in selecting the sample size as well as availing funds to train more mental health practitioners and taking the project in several mental health centers for better results. Furthermore, noting the impact that the project has in improving quality of care is a critical aspect in seeking funding.

Overall rating

It can be concluded that the quality improvement project is very good explaining with ease and objectivity the aim of the project. The personal history, lipid screening, and glucose screening have particularly shown a measurable gain. Additionally, with the project, waist circumference as a variable has shown increased recording even though only through recommendation. Furthermore, the collection of personal and family history collected has not met the requirements of documenting full history. Study and analysis methods, as well as results, have been adequately organized with a clear indication of the limitations to the study. However, it would be critical to providing budgets within which the project will work.
