In the study cited by McGonigal, people experienced a lot of stress and had a negative perception about the stress with the belief that stress is harmful to their health had a 43% increase risk of dying. On the other end, people who passed through a lot of stress but never perceived stress as dangerous were not likely to experience and had the lowest dying risk. According to her, over the last eight years, a research revealed that 182,000 American citizens had premature deaths which were caused by their belief that stress is harmful to their health.

Describe the outcomes of the Social Stress Test.

During the Social Stress Test, the audience might be a little stressed out, which might lead the heart to pound faster than usual. Due to anxiety, the breathing rate may be increased. However, the outcomes might be positive to one's perception. If the heart is pounding faster, then it is preparing one for action, and the increased breathing rate is facilitating the supply of oxygen into the brain.

What influences does oxytocin have on the stress response and what is the physical implication on the body?

The oxytocin influences an individual to seek for the stress support from other people. Typically, it influences one to tell the other person how they are feeling instead of hiding it to themselves. The oxytocin facilitates people to know each other when in stress to support one another in handling the pressure. The physical implication of the body is that oxytocin makes someone have crave physical contact with their friends and families, which is typically a social contact and social support.

Describe the impact of “Caring Created Resilience.”

Typically, the people who show concern to others and spent most of their time helping other people have no increase in stress-related risks of dying. On the other end, people who spend most of their time tackling their own stress rather than helping others have an increased risk of dying due to stress. Therefore when one connects with others under stress, they can create resilience.

After watching the TED talk, for at least 24 hours, practice thinking about your stress in a new way. Include at least one act of caring. Reflect on your experience.

Describe the stress and how you perceived the situation. How did thinking about stress in a new way change the stress experience?

Notably, I had a lot of stress on my first class-presentation, and I feared what the other students would view me in case I made a mistake. I perceived the situation and stress as harmful to my health. My new way of thinking about stress has changed my experience from the perception that stress is detrimental to an understanding that stress prepares me to handle my situation.

What act of caring did you carry out?

As an act of caring, I joined the other students who were under the same stress to help them rehearse prior to the presentation. In this case, I was able to exchange my ideas about the presentation with them and felt a bit little nervous.

What was the physical and emotional response?

My heart was pounding faster, and I was breathing heavily. I was not able to relax due to the tension. Notably, my stress response nudged me to tell others how I was feeling to seek their support. Furthermore, emotional stress response enhanced my response to develop sympathy on the other students who had a similar or worse stress situation.

How can you use this technique in the future?

Typically, in future when I am stressed, I will use the stress as my strength to handle my situation, and I will spend most of my time helping others and revealing to them what am feeling instead of bottling my feelings up.
