Consumer decision making on the use of a specific product is not static and over time, and it changes depending on the consumers' personal attributs and characteristics or on the nature of the product itself. Consumer decision making is influenced by personal, social, psychological, and situational factors (Lamb, Hair and McDaniel, 2019). The change in the nature of the product and the available product information also influence consumer decision making. Personal characteristics like life stages impact the nature of a consumer's decision on a product. Using a personal example, I have used shoes as a product from childhood until now. However, my decision making on the shoe to buy has not been constant since childhood. As a kid, I used to prefer very fancy and colorful shoes. As I grew to be a teenager, my preference for fancy colorful foot ware diminished, and I preferred trendy shoes. As I grew to become a young adult, I was keen on shoe fashions that are compatible with my personality and had a test of specific colors that suit my personality too. Currently, in my middle ages, I prefer sober shoes, and my buying behavior is influenced by my type of employment, my income levels, and my social class.
An individual's decision-making process differs from an institutional decision-making process when buying a simmilar product. According to Lamb, Hair and McDaniel (2019), a personal decision is based on individuals' social, psychological, situational, and personal factors. While a company's decision-making process is guided by clearly set company procurement policies. As a company purchasing manager, when buying a personal computer, my decision-making process is simply guided by factors like my preferred Brand, my budget, the portability of the computer, usability, and storage space requirements. The decision to buy is then personal and does not depend on any other parties; thus, the purchase can be spontaneous. For company buying, the decision making process is lengthy and depends on the departments use of the computers. The departments uses of the computers need to be analyzed to ensure the acquired computers are able to deliver to the departments expectations. Issues on the computers uses, the operating system used, kind of peripherals to be used, hard disk capacity and speed, the processor size, warrants and serviceability are considered. The company may have a preference for a specific brand of computers; hence the newly acquired computers need to be of the same Brand too for uniformity. The buying process is also done by biding and not spontaneous buying. A committee vets received bids and approve the most competitive bid. On approval the accounts department pays the supplier on receipt of the computers.
