The topic of research in the current health promotion study will be “ Alliance Building between Therapists and Patients to Mitigate Opioid Abuse and Prevention of Relapse among Teenagers.”  The topic is relevant to health promotion because it involves finding solutions to opioid abuse, which has become a severe public health concern. Chronic abuse of opioids causes significantly clinical impairment or distress. Larochelle et al. (2018) submit that opioid use disorder (OUD) has been on the rise. According to Dydyk et al. (2020), OUD has affected 16 million people worldwide, with over 2.1 million OUD patients coming from the United States. Dydyk et al. further state that OUD is responsible for more than 120, 000 deaths in the world.

While most of the opioids being used today are prescribed, many are illegally obtained. Between 2012 and 2017, opioid prescriptions were over 191 million (Dydyk et al., 2020). Clinicians give patients opioid prescriptions to relieve diarrhea, decrease cough, or control pain (Haight et al., 2018). The misuse of opioids cuts across various social backgrounds. Olsen and Sharfstein (2014) opine that OUD occurs to people from all socioeconomic and educational backgrounds. The OUD public health problem is more devastating, given that it affects even the young generation putting the nation’s generational growth into a dangerous path. Almost 10% of the U.S. population aged 12 years and over, used an illegal drug once in March 2020 (Dydyk et al., 2020).

Given the fatal consequences of opioid misuse, this study will be helpful. It will explore the causes of opioid use and the use of alliance-building between therapists and patients through a patient-centered care (PCC) approach. PCC facilitates patient-engagement in finding the most suitable treatment to mitigate opioid addiction (Wu et al., 2016). Therefore, this topic is crucial because it addresses a serious public health concern.
