For a long time now, I have been experiencing some major speech anxiety, specifically nervousness whenever I am talking in front of a group. My speech anxiety is often accompanied by symptoms of sweating, shaking, butterflies in the stomach, and a rapid heartbeat. I have learned that speech anxiety is something normal that happens to almost every public speaker. However, most of the experienced public speakers have mastered the art of dealing with these symptoms, and they end up appearing confident and skilled while on the stage. The good thing that I have come to learn is that most of the anxiety symptoms is barely visible to the evidence, despite the fact that we sometimes feel like it is written all over our face.
I have done a lot of research regarding how to get rid of my speech anxiety and nervousness on stage. I started by making an analysis of what I am afraid of when delivering my speech, and I came to the realization that I am just afraid of looking stupid, or maybe forgetting everything that I had practiced. To overcome this, I made a resolution that I will be preparing my speeches based on the topics that interest me. I also aim at being early and thorough when it comes to preparation of my speech. My teacher insists on the need for practice and a lot more practice when it comes to public speaking. I will be practicing my speech at least ten times on my own in front of the mirror so as to pinpoint any mistakes that I make. I will also make some short notes outlining the main points of my speech so that I do not forget the important things. By doing these important things, I believe that I will be well-positioned to overcome my speech anxiety, and specifically nervousness.
