When someone has a preconceived opinion about something or someone, that person is biased. Personal bias in unintentional and most people are victims of bias. A bias can either be in favour or against the subject. Having been brought up in a family that believed Muslims are dangerous people, I grew up having a negative feeling about anybody that was a Muslim. While in school I used to hate on my classmates who were Muslims because I had the idea that they were terrorist and that they should not be regarded as good people. I, therefore, grew up biased against Muslims until my adult life and even in the workplace.

Life has a way of making us learn lessons that will help us to abandon the negative attitudes we all had had regarding certain things when we were young. There are experiences that have helped me abandon the bias in my workplace. First I have learnt that people are the same regardless of race, religion and gender. I have learnt this by trying to interact with Muslims in workplace and even in social life, and to my realization, we share same views regarding terrorism, and that makes me realize that anyone can be a terrorist and not just Muslims, it’s only that Terrorists have used Islamic religion to hide their inhuman acts.

The second experience in addressing bias focused on self-reflection and how I perceive Muslims, I managed to do this by putting myself in the shoe of someone who is a Muslim. Having in mind that Islam is the most biased religion, I began to realize how unfair I was becoming and I began treating them positively. The third experience involved forming a friendship with people from different religious backgrounds, and we all focused on the things that shape our lives as opposed to the things that make us see the differences we have. I managed to achieve this by involving my friends who were also biased against the Islam religion. With the experiences, I began to view things positively and treated everyone equally regardless of religion.
