What are the Implications of Prenatal Diagnosis of Genetic Conditions? 

There are a number of prenatal implications of genetic conditions ranging from social, legal, and ethical issues. During the prenatal diagnosis, they may be a worst-case scenario where the physician might recommend abortion of the unborn child. In our society set up, abortion is an uncommon issue. Also when looking at it ethically, the principles of medicine will get violated when a human being that cannot be cured gets terminated. 

Why is counseling an Essential Part of this Process? 

When an individual is about to undergo the prenatal diagnosis, process counseling is essential. In some extreme cases that we have seen above, that needs the fetus to get terminated may be traumatic to the affected people hence the need to prepare them psychologically. During the counseling process, the doctors narrate the various possible risks that are associated with the process.

What Factors Will Affect a Couple's Decision to Pursue Testing? 

The main factor that may impact a couple's decisions is antenatal counseling. If a couple had antenatal counseling before, they will have more information with regards to the prenatal diagnosis process that will affect their choice. On the other hand, when a couple has less information about the process, they tend to feel that it will work therefore keeping their baby healthy. 

What is the Nurse's Role in this Process? 

The nurse plays a critical role in monitoring the fetus and its mother. Also, they take part in conducting several examinations on pregnant women. Another task undertaken by them is making sure the patients understand clearly what the various lab tests mean. Lastly, the nurses ensure that they monitor the development of the fetus. These roles played by the nurses' help in the recovery process of the patients as well as the growth of the unborn children.
