The hypothetico-deductive approach applies to clinical decision-making. The method involves the four main stages of cue recognition or acquisition, hypothesis generation, cue interpretation, and finally, hypothesis evaluation. The process begins with cue recognition when the clinician establishes that an issue has an element of novelty. This process involves eliminating apparent explanations for the phenomenon (Portney, 2020). If the problem is novel, the clinician needs to understand it and, if possible, eliminate any adversities, it might pose. The second step is hypothesis generation, where the clinicians use a combination of intellect and expertise to create a potential explanation for the phenomenon. This potential explanation is only a hypothesis, but it should be the most likely explanation.

The third step, the cue interpretation, where the clinician will access the implications of the hypothesis. The third step is critical as it determines whether the hypothesis is worth pursuing. If the implications are negligible, the clinician should abandon the hypothesis (Portney, 2020). However, if the hypothesis has tangible implications, the clinician will move to the fourth step, the experimentation. This is the step where the clinician conducts experiments to either confirm or rule out the hypothesis.

Clinical expertise brings three main contributions to evidence-based practice. The first input is an understanding of the clinical state and circumstances surrounding it(Portney, 2020). Most EPB issues revolve around a clinical problem, and the clinician's understanding of the problem is crucial. The second is availing of the relevant research regarding the subject. Research and publication on medical subjects have been going on for centuries, which provides sufficient data for EPB research (Portney, 2020). Finally, clinician expertise regarding patient satisfaction is also crucial. Patients vary exponentially; thus, there is no blue print to patient satisfaction. The clinician will use intellect and experience to determine what works best for individual patients.
