Immigration is the movement of individuals from their motherland to live in a foreign country either as permanent residents or naturalized citizens. Other immigrants take up employment as migrant workers or temporarily as foreign workers then they end up living permanently in those host countries. Immigration has a significant impact on the objective well-being of natives such as labor and living conditions. It affects the well-being of the local population too. Also, it impacts on the perception the natives have on immigrants.

The wellbeing of the natives includes the condition of social services and payments, the level of their employment or unemployment and compensation, and the dynamics of consumer prices and living conditions (Pavlovna, 445). The inflow of immigrants increases the share of local workers who join the labor market enabling the natives holding those positions to move to areas of higher qualification levels. Moreover, the inflow of unqualified immigrant workers has allowed the natives in the sphere of physical labor to shift to occupations requiring better-paid communication skills and specific cognitive abilities.

The wellbeing indicators include the emotional impact of immigration. The migrants, mostly being less-to-do groups encounter emotional challenges in their new environments. They rarely experience positive emotions such as joy and happiness, but instead, they suffer negative feelings such as anxiety, stress, anger, and sadness (Pavlovna, 447). The negative feelings are brought about by the discrimination they face in the destination countries. Discrimination is as a result of difficulties in adapting themselves to a new cultural environment. Also, they face social isolation and live life in isolation from their families. This leads to a decrease in their social status compared to that before migrating, especially among people with a high level of qualification and significant career achievements.

In most cases, people in the receiving countries are either against immigration or support it due to their perception of the consequences from immigration. Those against it argue that it results in the growth of crime, corruption, and an increase in competition in the labor market (Pavlovna, 448). Those who support it consider immigration useful as it enriches the culture of receiving countries and favors the filling of vacancies, compensating for the deficit of labor. Also, creates additional jobs due to better business opportunities.
