The King’s conceptual system theory was introduced by Imogene King who was born in the year 1923. Imogene pursued bachelor in science of nursing, at St. Louis University in the year, 1948. This theory is well known as the theory of goal attainment. Mr. King focuses on guiding and directing the nurses on the nurse-patient relationship and conforming to the patients to meet the goals, which is, achieving good health. From the title itself, the theory of goal attainment, this model focuses on achieving certain goals. It elaborates that the nurse and the patient take part in the communication process, set their targets and they both take action to achieve their targets.
The theory has three systems, namely; personal systems, social systems, and the interacting system. Under the personal system, King refers to an individual. The notions of this personal system and the fundamentals of getting human beings are growth and development, self, perception and the body image. According to King, perception is the most important because it influences the human being’s behavior. For instance, a person’s opinions of body image, space, or other time can affect the way he or she reacts to individuals, events and the objects in his or her life. As persons undergo the process of growth and development in their lives, understanding with some changes in their structure and function of their own bodies over the time, it influences their view of self (Killeen & King, 2012) .

Additionally, the King’s conceptual theory has the interacting theory which involves the interactions of individuals with each other. King states that two individuals who are interacting are dyads, two persons as triads while four or more persons who are interacting as small or a large group. An excellent example of the interacting system is the communication between a nurse and the client because it is a dyad (King, 2013) . The communication between the nurse and client can be either verbal or nonverbal. Verbal communication includes spoken, and the written communication whereas the nonverbal form of communication involves touch, appearance, posture, distance, and expressions.
The social system happens to be the third and the final system in the King’s conceptual system theory. Social systems refer to groups of people within a community or a society that has a common goal and values. The social systems give a groundwork for social interactions as well as relationships hence enabling the establishment of behavior and courses of action.
These three systems led to the development of the King’s conceptual theory. However, King states that the interpersonal system had the most considerable influence in the development of this theory regardless of the fact that the social and the personal systems control the quality of care. The interpersonal system enables two people who are strangers who are strangers to incorporate in a health care institution to help and be helped as well in maintaining a state of health that allows working in roles (King, 2010) . For instance, the interactions between a nurse and the client lead to transformation hence goal attainment.
The king’s can help in defining a clinical problem because it informs nurses that communication and trust between a nurse and the patient are essential. Clinical pathways deal with the same issue, whereby nurses talk to their patients care and targets with the participation of each other (Killeen & King, 2012) . This theory can be applied in that; the nurses can call for a common nursing language which would promote the unity of all the nurses in the world. Also, global communication would be upgraded for the nurses as well as the interdisciplinary groups, of which they are a part of the groups. The healthcare professions can also be made to have their own language (Killeen & King, 2012) . This may include, theories of learning and implementing, try nursing researches and how nursing theories can be useful in achieving great care which is cost effective and excellent outcomes for the patients. Nurses should be given chances to take part in designing the future of healthcare. The goal attainment theory motives the nurses to have power over things such as space, time, body image, growth and development as a process and by expansion, perception. This is because, with the current technology advancement, most of the nurses may end up losing their jobs if they do not make use of these concepts. For example, the technology is enabling the healthcare providers to receive information about a patient through telecommunication channels and provide the necessary help (King, 2013) . This kind of communication leads to decrease in the face-to-face setting of the nurse and patients, and that is why need to apply the king’s theory, the interactive system to be specific. Moreover, the theory enables nurses to learn better communication skills with their patients which enable the patients to feel free while explaining their problems to the nurses. Similarly, it can allow nurses to describe different types of processes which might be relevant to the patient, and maybe the patient is not comfortable with it, for example, the importance of ambulation after cholecystectomy surgery.
A quality committee can regulate the results in the nursing field using the King’s theory. For instance, scholarly products such as guidebooks under this theory can be published and disseminated to the clinical informatics subcommittees. The guidebooks can, therefore, be supplied to the healthcare professionals. Finally, the clinical informatics subcommittee can create a program of which a discussion of the lessons learned can be held. The guidebook can also provide more information on project management and nursing informatics (Killeen & King, 2012) . This information can lead to improvement in the healthcare of the patients.
The nursing theory by Florence Nightingale is an additional theory which aligns with the King’s conceptual system theory. The modern nursing is multi-focused, always changing and very complex. However, the goal of nursing has never been different ever since the time Florence Nightingale. The purpose of nursing has always been the provision of a safe and caring surrounding that encourages the patients’ health and well-being. Proper use interpersonal tools such as advocacy promote a care-giving surrounding. There are many upcoming opportunities and challenges in bettering the quality as well as the safety of the healthcare. However, the major one requires a purposeful redesign of healthcare institutions and processes.
