The concept of imperialism dates back to the times of the Roman and Oman empires. This continued in the later centuries giving birth to among others the British empires and North American empires. Imperialism is a concept that entails dominion of poor countries with the aim of obtaining cheap labor and raw materials and establishing industries in those countries. Imperialists also aim to get market for their products in the so called “undeveloped countries (Parenti, 1995) . Most developed countries use greedy locals to gain entry into the countries they perceive to have valuable resources. They do so by funding civil wars. Afterwards, they then pretend that they are coming to the war-ridden country to offer stability. Once in the country, they are able to freely access the resources which they take back to their developed countries as raw materials (Parenti, 1995) . Blood Diamonds (2006) is a movie that illustrates this fact well. It is a story of blood diamonds. Blood diamonds refer to diamonds that were mined in war zones in Sierra Leone. These diamonds were then sold to fund conflicts. In so doing, the imperialists were able to further their agenda of exploiting diamonds in the war stricken country.

Blood Diamonds (2006) is a classic case study of how imperialists gain access into countries they have interest in. they do so by funding wars in such countries thereby gaining access to such areas. In such countries, imperialists claim to be offering security and stability. However, this is a mischievous way of gaining access to such countries and setting up their establishments. While in those countries, they use the locals to further their agenda. Captain Poison uses Vandy, a fisherman from Shenge to further his agenda of diamond exploitation in Sierra Leone. Miracles Rising (2013) is also another film that demonstrates the Freedom journey of South Africa. It is a triumph story against apartheid. The Dutch in this case were the imperialists who established dominion over South Africans. They exported South Africa’s gold and diamond to their home country. In the case of South Africa, apartheid was used as the tool of division and control.

Reading the article “Imperialism 101” by Michael Parenti reveals the current imperialists. China and the United States are the current imperialists. They further their agenda by exporting loans and weaponry. Giving out loans to the so called developing countries creates economic dependency and subsequent dominion. In the coming years, the current imperialists could have some of the Asian and Africa countries as their colonies.
