Family refers to a social unit of two or more people who are related by blood, marriage, or adoption. This unit often comprises of parents and their children who most likely reside together in one place. People who belong to one family share the same goals and values and are committed to each other.

I chose an objective definition to explain the meaning of the term 'family.' As much as this approach specifies and restricts the people who make up a family unit, I believe that it offers the right definition. I am of the opinion that people cannot choose the families from which they come. When one is born or adopted into a family, they do not get to choose who his or her parents are. They simply become a part of that family. Parents do not have an alternative option of choosing which child they want to have in their family and which they cannot accept. Children have their parents and their siblings as their family because of the blood relation that they have. If the children do not get along well with the parents or are separated in some way as a result of divorce or other issues, both parents remain to be family even if constant communications are not maintained. This way, a child cannot choose to commit a parent as not being part of their family.

The issue of marriage is one tricky aspect of the definition. Most often, people who have been united through marriage automatically become one family. I believe that if formal processes and documentation have been followed well, the law recognizes the couple as a family. When children are born, the family becomes more established and defined. If a case of separation occurs, both parents remain to be family despite not residing together in a commonplace. One spouse cannot, therefore, omit the other partner as not being their family member. The reason for this is that the marriage agreement has not been broken. If divorce processes have been completed and the marriage has been officially broken, then the husband and wife have released each other from their commitment and vows. This occurrence does not in any way involve their children who have both parties as their parents despite the divorce shaking up the family unit. If a child lives with one parent due to the separation or divorce, they cannot choose which parent is family.

When the husband or wife remarries after being separated or divorced from each other, they add up third parties to their family circles. Children then find themselves with stepfathers or stepmothers. I believe that even if they do not have a good relationship with the new parents; that does not mean that they are not their family. Having bad relationships with family members is not an excuse to ignore the fact they are still family. Family, therefore, cannot be chosen but should be embraced at all times because we can never separate ourselves from this social unit that makes up the community.
