Evidence-based practice involves the incorporation of expert opinion and clinical expertise in healthcare delivery. Available information is converted to answerable clinical questions then evidence that effectively answers the questions is sought. The answers obtained through the evidence is appraised for practicability, impact and validity. Practitioners base their decision-making on the integration of the evidence to improve the nursing care delivery procedures. The three major components of evidence-based practice in nursing include finding the best external evidence, involving expertise opinion and patient’s preference.

Traditional nursing care delivery was based on trial and error. The elements that perfectly worked got adopted by the next generations of the nursing care systems ( Mackey & Bassendowski , 2017 ). The healthcare systems were primarily founded on unresearched methods. As introduced by Florence Nightingale, some solid interventions such as handwashing have been proven by contemporary research to be of the essence. Other traditions were not valuable but continued to be practiced as the status quo. Nursing care and healthcare delivery have taken an evidence-based approach over the recent decades. One advantage of evidence-based nursing practice is that accurate declaration is made on specific nursing and healthcare interventions. Modern practice has abandoned the traditional trial and error approach to healthcare delivery and adopted the evidence-based approach ( Mackey & Bassendowski , 2017 ). Better and effective patient care outcomes are achieved through evidence-based practice. Health care organizations significantly reduce their expenses on equipment or products that are no longer needed.
