The safety of the society is due to the efforts of the men and women who fight on war fronts to ensure people stay safe. As such, whenever such soldiers come back, they are accorded the respect they deserve and earned. Different opinions exist concerning the hiring process where some business people and civilians hold diverse views concerning veterans. Although everyone is justified for their stands, failing to recognize and appreciate the contribution of such individuals is a crime. Ten years in the military service leaves veterans with experiences through different deployments and operational tempos. Additionally, with the ever-increasing wars, the number of veterans will grow, which leaves speculations on how they can get employment. With the mass of wealth gained by the veterans, getting them into companies as employees is a move that faces both criticism and support from different quarters. According to different findings, veteran’s incorporation into any company system presents numerous advantages.

Argument

Skill Translation

Not everyone is for the idea of employing veterans. However, those against the thought quote skill translation as the main factor to consider. To such companies, the veterans lack the ideal skill and expertise, especially those sought by firms. On the other hand, the firms do not know which skills they should be looking out for in military trained individuals. Besides, those against the thought do not understand the intricacies of military training, which leaves most of them to speculate what knowledge the veterans could be having. Even the human resource department fails to precisely determine the correct measure upon which the military service employees should get employed. Without a definitive way of understanding the capability of the veterans, it becomes difficult for the employers to decide the best position suited for such people. As a result, it is possible for them to be assigned roles they are not suited for. Instead of going through all that hassle, those against hiring the veterans assert that it would be easy to get civilians qualified and experienced into the positions (Gamble, 2017)

Counter Argument

Value for Veterans’ Leadership and Teamwork Skills

According to different findings, respondents cited leadership and teamwork skills as the leading factors that lead firms to search and hire veterans. Those from the military show that they have the ability and strength to work in a team that follows a hierarchical formation. Indeed, their experience in working on team-oriented tasks where they were responsible for designing work plans transformed the weaknesses of team members into a source of success. The present companies are different from the past in that they value teamwork, which helps make things work faster. As such, having veterans who are competent leaders and team players give any company an advantage over the competitors. In other words, hiring the veterans becomes a goal for those companies whose projects have to be accomplished in group teams (Gamble, 2017; Yanchus et al., 2018)

The Character of Veterans Make Them Good Employees

Surviving in the army requires trust, integrity, and maturity, which makes them dependable at all times. In the military, the call is always for one to keep their cool regardless of what the situation may entail. As such, instead of panicking, they look for the best solutions out of the dilemma. Companies need people who can hold their end when the market or economy becomes a threat such that, instead of panicking and making mistakes, there is a need for those who can relax and look for alternative ways of solving the issues (Johnson, 2014; Agard, 2016) . In addition, having veterans in the company translates to the organization upholding virtues of integrity and dependability, which is appealing to customers.

Disciplined, and Follow Processes Well and With Safe Operations

A key military rule is that all those under the guidance of a specific general, lieutenant or squad leader abide by the leader’s directives. It is only under these circumstances that deployments and operations become a possibility. Those advocating for veteran employment hold onto the fact that the rigidness and loyalty of veterans ensure the work is accomplished at the exact time it was set to. Moreover, the discipline allows the firm management to know cases where employees hit a hurdle, which helps make corrections early on before things get worse (Agard, 2016) . To supporters, the structural employee operations ensure the safety of other employees and at the same time, offers insight on the importance of discipline amongst employees.

Veteran Expertise

Most companies value the veterans for the various skills and expertise they have. Even those that fail to hire veterans agree on the uniqueness of the skills veterans possess, for example, concerning logistics, technical specialties, and security. The veterans acquire all these skills in their military deployments or through experiences gained over a long period. To this end, getting such skills into a company results in diverse outcomes that acknowledge and appreciate the firm’s operational environment. In addition, military men and women share a common code of brotherhood that identifies them across the world regardless of where they are (Gamble, 2017; Yanchus et al., 2018) . Considering the world has transitioned into a global business environment, having people with the ability to identify with others in different geographical environments offers firms a good chance of staying competitive.

Dynamic Environments Help Veterans Adapt and Perform Better

Veterans work in dynamic environments throughout their military service. As such, their ability to adapt and revolve around different factors make them spot chances and opportunities even in the new environments. Additionally, depending on the changes in the environment, veterans quickly alter their decisions and options available to them in preference for those that are best suited for the company. To most employees, the current environment is not only dynamic but stressful too. Therefore, having an individual who can quickly transition from one sector to another without the effects taking a toll on one’s body is a valuable advantage to the organization (Gamble, 2017; Yanchus et al., 2018; Duncan, 2018; Schulker & Matthews, 2018; Johnson, 2014; Agard, 2016) . Such an effect is witnessed in the constant production by the veterans.

Veterans Are Resilient

Some organizations recruit veterans due to their resilience despite the adverse conditions they may face. Veterans on their deployment mission often have to contend with failures and harsh conditions. As a result, they are mentally prepared for any condition regardless of how the circumstance may be. For firms seeking to venture into new grounds or markets, having veterans as part of the team will help promote and develop high productivity amongst other employees. Besides, through the hardships, veterans can encourage other employees to follow in line and work towards the set goals regardless of the ensuing challenges. Additionally, most veterans are ready and willing to travel to new locations whenever the company opens up new stores, which work to the advantage of the company (Schulker & Matthews, 2018)

Hiring Veterans Comes With Public Relation Benefits

Different institutions in the society advocate for the rights and opportunities for veterans in the different field. Therefore, by hiring veterans, it becomes easy for such firms to navigate legal and government regulations. The perception of appearing veteran-friendly gives such firms a good chance of furthering their relationship with the government-related projects. To the public, the firms create a good rapport as they recognize the firm’s effort to promote and develop the veterans and their families (Duncan, 2018) . All firms endeavor to get to the right side of the customers hence having veterans is a good way of ensuring customers appreciate the efforts from the concerned firm.

Veterans Are Loyal

Loyalty is key to continued development and progressive development in the business environment. With competitors willing to poach the best employees from other companies, having employees who are loyal and dedicated to the welfare of the company is an aspect that is both beneficial and reassuring. A majority of the companies that employ veterans hold onto the thought that they have people dedicated to the welfare of the organization regardless of the incentives by other parties to deviate that loyalty. As such, the firm management can rest assured in the quality and authenticity of the veteran operators. As presented above, being dependable calls for a complete overview of the company’s operation and doing the best within the abilities to accomplish the best results (Gamble, 2017; Yanchus et al., 2018; Duncan, 2018) . Firms, therefore, have nothing to fear from the veterans as their loyalty is assured.

Hiring Veterans Is the Right Thing to Do

Although the different reasons explained above have their merits, as argued by some firms, employing veterans is a social responsibility. Indeed, veterans are the reason the nation enjoys peaceful moments. Their dedication to fighting for the nation makes them far more patriotic when compared to other people. Besides, it is through their efforts that people get a chance to preach and advocate for peace throughout the world. The society has a responsibility of giving back to the veterans as appreciation for their efforts. Patriotism and pride are part of any national systems and nations could become jeopardized if the all-volunteer force fails. The veterans served their nation; hence it is the nation’s chance to serve them, and offering them a job is one way of ensuring they get adequately compensated. However, this does not go without noting that firms have to make profits to stay afloat. Indeed, while firms may consider doing good as a responsibility to the veterans, profitability should also be prioritized hence an understanding of the above factors is crucial (Gamble, 2017; Yanchus et al., 2018; Duncan, 2018; Schulker & Matthews, 2018; Johnson, 2014; Agard, 2016)

Conclusion

While society is indebted to veterans, firms also have to make profits. Hence, the call is for such firms to recognize the skills presented by the veterans and understand the position best suitable to the firm’s operations. Although different firms are against employing veterans citing a translation of skills and expertise as the reason, they fail to recognize the advantages gained by having the veterans. Firms are grounded in cultural systems that dictate the actions and operational activities by the employees. As such, training and educating the veterans to get assimilated into the company operations could work in favor of all those involved giving them a chance to understand and promote development in the company.

The above presentation, therefore, has highlighted the different advantages gained by having veterans in the employment of the company including resilience, leadership skills, dedication, loyalty, discipline, and dependability. All of the mentioned characteristics are essential in ensuring the survival of the firm on different fronts. As various scholars have argued, the current business environment is dynamic and competitive and having the people with the strength and resilience to stand up to the competition is the best way of ensuring firms gain a competitive edge. Hiring the veterans thus gives the firms the needed advantage over those that do not employ the veterans.
