As identified, the most persistent and significant HR (human resources) challenge for nonprofit groups concerns retaining and attracting a talented workforce. To retain employees and volunteers, the human resources managers should be extra selective in the personnel they employ (Layton, 2016). It takes a special individual to take on different duties in a nonprofit organization particularly with the significant levels of stress and relatively low pay compared to different for-profit sectors. Rather than employing the first individual, they find to fill a vacancy; the HR team ought to become selective while hiring and find a recruit who can do the work as well as one who is passionate about his or her work (Layton, 2016).

During the process of interviewing potential employees and volunteers, the HR team should take their time while reviewing every applicant’s previous position in detail (Layton, 2016). The team should also ask the applicant where he or she excels most in his or her last position including the aspects of their previous employment allowed their skills and talents to shine (Layton, 2016). Additionally, extrinsic and intrinsic factors could motivate employees and volunteers to work in nonprofit organizations. Intrinsic factors include individual motivators and mission attachment. External factors include organizational support, appreciations, rewards, positive work environment, job satisfaction, and excellent communication (Harris, 2012). Corporate mission entices individuals with comparable views to the company and preserves them.
