The family unit forms the basis of interactions within our social niches as such relations transcend to the immediate community. It is comprehending how such a small group operates that assists in determining dynamic relationships that would spearhead inducing healthy engagements. An analysis of my family, which functions as African American Christians, and its attributes using a social work perspective considering strengths, cultural values, and systems theory would assist in improving the unit.

The structural description citing strengths is imperative as a foundation for referencing when comprehending the framework of a family. Mine functions as a broad umbrella with the nuclear family entailing our father, mother, and siblings as a stable composition. The extended branch bears significant value as we live with our grandparent who integrates into the family structure. Meaning the foundational structure entails my parents, siblings, and my grandparent. Our relatives live in the same neighborhood, making it easy to access my cousins who are like brothers and sisters. My uncles and aunts, on the other hand, operate as an extended branch of parents. Safe to say the extended unit of the family is as important as the nuclear to mirror one big family. Our strengths as relatives include the unity that draws us closer in times of joy or sorrow. I’d say living close to each other is also a positive as it makes it easy to reach out and bolsters our relationships.

The family dynamics such as its life cycle, the form of communication, and specific roles assists in making it simple to comprehend social networks within the unit. Mine shows characteristics of operating at the stage of parenting. It involves guiding the young ones through stages of adolescence which occurs in two phases i.e., early and late. The parenting stage influences family dynamics as it exhibits the paramount engagements that involve proper guidance and care at a critical juncture in growth and development. My family uses the oral form of communication extensively. As Black Americans, we find ourselves eloquent as we have an open policy of sharing tagging respect among ourselves (Ojukwu & Oni, 2017). It influences the dynamics of the unit as it creates a suitable environment for sorting out problems and communicating effectively. Two family members who greatly benefit the family is my father and mother who have specific roles. The former is the breadwinner while the latter takes care of domestic duties. They work together to ensure our family stays aloof.

An analysis of the family using systems theory and comprehending its cultural values are beneficial for social workers. Firstly, the former details our way of life, citing elements we hate and those we appreciate. It is the mandate of a social worker to review the aspects described above, such as communication style, strengths, and functions of unique members to develop a roadmap of successfully comprehending the cultural values. Such family dynamics determine the uniqueness of one unit from another, thereby assisting the social worker in identifying specific gaps (Kirst-Ashman & Hull, 2018). Subsequently, he or she can evaluate efforts that would support a family to adjust to a healthy system. It is noteworthy that a family unit operates within a specific community which mirrors systematic involvement. Dergachova et al. (2017) submit that systems theory explores such dynamics of the nature of complex systems in environment and society; considering a description of how a group may operate in unison to produce a specific result. My family, therefore, in such light bears promise in interacting with the immediate community, given our openness and togetherness.

The descriptions above of my family regarding strengths, unique roles of the parents, communication style, and cultural values would assist a social worker in improving how we operate. Systems theory also entails an avenue for assessment to understand the dynamics of the family vis-à-vis systemic involvement.
