The Maritime Transportation System is a critical transportation infrastructure component in the United States; it generally involves transporting people and cargo passing through local or international waterways such as oceans, rivers, and lakes. The vessels often employed in maritime transport include boats, ships, and ferries. Maritime security is n general term that oversees security measures and issues that affect the naval domain related to national safety, the marine setting, the economy, and human security.

Various states have developed maritime security strategies that ensure security measures are observed in the marine environment. The United States directs specific security initiatives in the marine transport system. The three core security measures include the Customs-Trade Partnership against Terrorism (C-TPAT), Container Security Initiative (CSI), and the International Ship and Port Security code (ISPS) ( Monacelli, 2018) . These measures ensure that cargo, human beings, the vessels, and the state boundaries are protected from any potential dangers during ferrying. Maritime security is indispensable as it covers a significant component of the United States economy, considering that the shipping industry fuels the global economy with an annual contribution of over 183 billion U.S dollars in gross productivity.

The Customs-Trade Partnership Against Terrorism is a U.S voluntary trade partnership program under the United States Customs and Border Protection. Member states join forces to facilitate the secure movement of cargo and passengers during maritime transportation. The Container Security Initiative was launched by the Customs and Border Protection agency to effect amplified security for freight shipped to the United States ( Roberts, Egan, Nelson & Whytlaw, 2019) . The International Ship and Port Security Code is an all-inclusive set of actions that boost the protection of ships and port facilities. This measure was set in response to the apparent threats that face ships and port facilities such as attacks or perennial marine accidents.
