As efforts are being implemented to improve the population health, there has been an increased focus on the various factors that are likely to adversely impact the health outcomes of different segments of the population. These factors range from social and physical to financial factors. The influence of the social determinants varies depending on the population and the health outcome under consideration. Since children are one of the most vulnerable groups, the paper will assess the impact that the parental income as a determinant, has on the health outcome of the group.

A study conducted by Sandel et al. (2016) in the United States identified a significant disparity in the health outcome of children from the poor economic background when compared to those from financial, economic backgrounds. The study has been supported by several other studies on the influence of income on the health of individuals that have focused on the impact of socio-economic income on the health of the children. The impact of the parental income on the health status of the children has been identified to be stronger when the disease under consideration is respiratory illnesses, infection, diseases linked with poor nutrition and the likelihood of suffering from chronic diseases (Hodgkinson et al. 2017). One reason for the influence of parental income on children health is attributable to the ability of the children from financially stable backgrounds to attain a high level of education. The low level of education among the children is then linked with increasing the risk of children birth, higher stress levels and also dropping out of school (Sandel et al. 2016).

One intervention to address the disparity is through the use of community-based practices. The goal of the approach is aimed at improving the availability of services, the ease of accessing these services and the quality of the healthcare services provided (Victorino & Gauthier, 2009). The approach can be implemented by initially contacting the community leaders and indicating to them the importance of the intervention. The resources needed include volunteering healthcare workers and funds to be obtained through community-based financing and assistance from donors. The effectiveness of the approach will be assessed using the number of children from poor financial background accessing the healthcare service and the reduced rate of respiratory and nutritional illnesses among the vulnerable group.
