Informatics integrates nursing science with a number of information managements, as well as analytical sciences for the identification, definition, management, and the communication of information needed in nursing practice. According to Moss, Seifert, and O’Sullivan (2016), nursing informatics provides essential support to nurses, patients, and inter-professional teams, among other stakeholders, when making essential care decisions. The decisions support their roles and influence the creation of a suitable healthcare setting that focuses on achieving desired health outcomes. Since I am competent in informatics, I believe that I can use the technologies that augment communication processing needed for the realization of the current informatics skill levels. The communication technologies in consideration include the clinical documentation systems and monitoring systems, among others (Moss, Seifert, & O’Sullivan, 2016). These technological tools enhance the transfer of information, which calls for the need for users to have particular technologic skills. Some of the most essential skills include the ability to use the technological tools to access, retrieve, and process information that can assist in arriving at suitable care decisions.
The TANIC self-assessment tool constitutes three categories of informatics competencies. They include basic computer skills, information literacy, as well as clinical information management (Sipes et al., 2016). An assessment of my score on the checklists is presented for the three categories; my best score was derived from the first category, basic computer skills. The scores from the other two categories were not so impressive. For this reason, I believe that my impression regarding my current informatics skill levels was altered because I have realized that informatics skills require more than the knowledge on how to use the technological tools that can enhance collaboration between healthcare stakeholders. For this reason, I believe that it would be essential for me to expand on my current skills level to enhance my competency.
