Interpersonal communication is a typical social process which generally helps in connection to meet personal needs as well as maintain a healthy relationship with other people. Interpersonal communication can be improved through the development and practice of communication in the best competence manner (Bevan, & Sole, 2014). Therefore, Bevan and Sole (2014) think that new strategies that fosters effective communication skills can establish a positive relationship and better execution of organizational strategy. To achieve success in communication, one should always practice the speech before another group of people such as family and friends. Interpersonal communication within an organization is essential which helps to communicate essential strategies for the company or personal growth. All the vital factors should be available to ensure connection is useful. Also, employers usually list communication as crucial job requirements in the workplace which significantly contribute to the success. There are various principles of interpersonal communication which reduce the barriers to effective communication.

Principles of Effective Interpersonal Communication

One of the main principles of effective interpersonal communication is respecting others and yourself is important (Bevan, & Sole, 2014). For effective communication it is very important to consider the audience and all parties involved in the communication process. There should be mutual understanding between different people, since lack of communication always result to biased opinion where people may end up disconnecting from the main message. Respecting for others will therefore mean that strong interpersonal skills have been acquired hence maintenance of strong relationship (Bevan and Kathy 2014). The intended message will therefore be delivered in the best way possible eliminating any form of communication barrier

Another principle is that for communication to be effective, one has to acknowledge their views as the only one in the communication process. Communication process is a two way process which requires message and proper feedback that will ensure all the necessary information have been delivered. According to Bevan and Sole (2014), a speaker should always consider their view as their opinion which means that they have to consider other peoples view. Effective communication will always incorporate engagement in a healthy discussion and communication process which will indicate clear topics. Therefore, different views can be submitted which will aim to ensure that everybody has receive an equal opportunity.

Instance of miscommunication

Miscommunication is very common among major communication process which tend to make communication process hindered through various factors. One of the best instance of miscommunication is that one day in New York, a husband called his wife to inform her about his stop over after work. The husband informed the wife that he was going to stop at Mike’s house on the way from work but would not be late. The miscommunication that emerged is that the wife thought that “won’t be late” would mean the husband will only stop at Mike’s place for a few minutes. However, the husband meant he would stop at Mike’s place and will not be late past midnight.

Miscommunication due to accent will create a significant barrier in the business which will negatively affect performance and service delivery in the market. In a communication exchange, accent means that different stakeholders involved have major problem understanding the intended message as pronunciations is affecting speech delivery. It may also affect self-esteem where a person may not be able to express themselves in the best way before a crowd. There is a need to acquire excellent and practical communication skills since all the organization strategies must be well communicated and fully implemented.

Barrier to Communication

One of the main barriers that caused miscommunication is language barrier within the region. Miscommunication mainly resulted from poor pronunciation as well as different accents in the workplace (Bevan and Kathy 2014). Most people in the world do not speak in English or French; hence a speaker who fails to use similar language that the audience will always create communication barriers. Whenever a person is communicating in an unfamiliar language, there are high chances they will not mention all the words in the best way possible hence passing the wrong message in the workplace. Also, since many people also came from different regions across the globe, miscommunication took place which tends to hinder communication process and success.

To develop and improve communication, it advisable to understand the content and context of communication before speaking. One should demonstrate before other people that they understand if there is any weakness in speech delivery. Therefore to ensure better pronunciation, one should never practice alone as it would be better to engage in public speaking to understand how to pass the intended message in the region.

Solution to Barriers to Communication

The barrier to communication can be solved through the use various approaches. One approach is that a person having communication issues and lack proper pronunciation need to learn the new language, which takes time. Such individuals can practice word pronunciations before a group of friends. They will be able to identify significant weakness hence providing the best solution on the pronunciation of certain words. It would also be useful to participate in group or in-class discussion and presentation which will aim to improve self-confidence in the communication process. It should be a voluntary process where a person will be willing to engage in the enhancement of better communication for their welfare.

To different language which tends to result in miscommunication, it should also be a standard measure to learn a new language which helps to add more value as well as boasting communication process. In the long run, the organization and top management also have a significant role to play in ensuring that proper communication process has been achieved to avoid distortion of the final message.
