Interpersonal communication is defined as communication between two or more people. It is also known as dyadic communication which can also occur through mediated channels such as email, telephone, social media et cetera. It is the basic form of personal communication. It is applicable formally and informally, and it is the basic foundation of quality relationships in any social setting. As such, the dyadic encounters forged in the course of time lead to the creation of even more significant and complex communication platforms.

The interpersonal communication, in my opinion, is best effected by the use of body cues. Body language is central and a core element of any communication. As such, there is the need for people to master non-verbal cues which could illuminate further meanings in engagements. It is prudent for those communicating to look out for body movements as it may be used to emphasize on various issues by the communicator. Wagging a finger may be used to note one’s sternness on a matter. In many scenarios, what comes out of a speaker’s mouth and what is communicated via body language may provide conflicting signals. These mixed signals present the listener room to opt either one of the two. Invariably, nonverbal cues are usually supreme as they occur subconsciously hence broadcasting a speaker’s innate feelings.

Still on nonverbal cues as appreciated in interpersonal communication much can be appreciated. Personal relationships or hope of future sustainable relationships can be projected at that instance. The way one listens, moves, looks and even reacts may tell the other party whether one cares. Trust, rapport, and clarity are inevitably enhanced when it emerges that your nonverbal signals match with the words you are saying. I believe if an individual endeavors to be a better communicator he or she ought to be sensitive not only to the prevailing body language and body cues of others but also his or hers. It is from the body cues that even interpersonal communication can occur for individuals that have a hearing impairment. Sign language is borne out of this knowledge and how effective body language is in revealing intentions of different individuals.

In an organizational framework, dyadic communication helps build the much empathy which also constitutes emotional intelligence. An employer or organizational leader that takes time to engage his or her employees at a personal level forge a powerful connection. This connection makes him or her approachable which is a fundamental element in the management of the human resource at the workplace. It enhances loyalty and morale which is central to boosting productivity. The interpersonal communication goes a long way in forging long-term relationships as well as creating room for clarification which ensures quality communication prevails given the context at the time.

Face to face channel is one of the primary ways that characterize interpersonal communication is the most preferred in many instances. As aforementioned it is rich in the message as it incorporates even nonverbal cues that are fundamental in accentuating the message being conveyed. The nonverbal cues give much meaning to the words spoken. That being said, technology has effectively grown over time evolving interpersonal communication as we know it. Synchronicity has been one of the core milestones that have continued to characterize interpersonal communication. The emergence of mobile phones and social media has been the key driver behind synchronicity. The mobile phones make it easy for one party to engage in conversations conveniently even while in motion or different geographical settings. The synchronized interpersonal communication is also reflected in the real-time video-calls which are currently easier to execute through basic smartphone communication applications such as Whatsapp.

The asynchronous interpersonal communication, on the other hand, is very common and partly perpetuated by existing technology. For instance, voice messages are usually left by individuals to explain their reasons for calling or seeking an audience with the other party. The asynchronous element is observed with the existence of text messaging, social media messaging websites and instant messaging. This communication is limited to the content being deposited through the mediation platforms. However, it lacks the richness that would make the message much more impactful and interesting.

Interpersonal communication should not be taken for granted as it is one of the core avenues that personal identity can be understood or evaluated. By engaging with others at a personal level, a person’s true personality can be gauged and relayed back. Interests can also be established. For instance, a conversation about soccer may be boring to an individual. He or she may use verbal or non-verbal cues to communicate this to the other party. Personal values can also emerge in the same context. A speaker may convey his or her true perspectives verbally on various issues hence highlighting what he or she stands for.

In conclusion, interpersonal communication is a powerful form of information exchange which can be restructured to accommodate different contexts. This is a very fundamental element as it appreciates the importance of fluidity in communication. It is prudent to note that this form of communication is critical in promoting socialization and meeting social needs. As such, interested actors manage to forge linkages and overall social health. It is seen as an integral element for individuals to survive in a multicultural environment. The practicality of interpersonal communication also makes it very central in the day to day activities where certain objectives or goals ought to be established.
