Part I: Executive Summary

Authored by Mike and Roland, the book titled ‘ Introduction to Engineering Ethics ’ 2nd edition was published in 2010. It addresses basic moral issues faced by engineers as well as basic ethics experienced in the field. This section provides an executive summary of chapter 5 (Commitment to Safety). Machine control systems are vulnerable and can malfunction due to unanticipated settings. It is fundamental for designing ideal human-machine interaction every time human safety is at stake. According to the authors, what may be termed as safe to one person may not be to another. Safety should, in turn, be thought in terms of comparisons and degrees. Something is regarded as a risk if it exposes a human being to unwanted or harmful experience ( Martin & Schinzinger, 2010 ). However, a risk is regarded as acceptable when the affected people aren’t apprehensible about it. Nevertheless, there is voluntarism and control, which refers to people's exposure to risks if only they are confident to have the hazards under their control.

For information about risk assessment, it is identified that the approach in which key information for decision making is presented can greatly impact how risks are perceived. Job-related risks are inevitable as workers take risks on their occupation in stride. However, people’s reaction to risk is defined by the magnitude and closeness or proximity to the victim. It is in turn-key to establishing effective assessing and reducing risk strategies. Nevertheless, the uncertainty is product designs as technology continues to replace the old applications and material with new ones. Performing risk-benefit analysis on large projects helps in justifying the worthiness of a project to the people. Despite the inability to establish a completely safe product, it is key to ensure the product fails safely without unintended risks. In addition to being safety conscious, it is strategic to conduct thorough testing, a way to report any hazards and emergency procedures to ensure maximum safety to the users.

Part II: Response to read the Chapter

Drawing from chapter 5 ( Commitment to Safety ), safety is a key factor that determines the success of any system, project or product that is in use by people. One major thought from the literature is always the existence of risk in every aspect of human. However, the primary focus should be providing safety not only to oneself, but also to the people around them. The literature is very relevant to me, as it highlights safety as one of the major concerns that should be factored in every engineering invention. Risks are inevitable; however, every engineering project should focus on solving previous hazards as well as being a safe product to use.
