Personally, I tend to believe that there is a conflict between evolution and religion. The reason as to why I think that there is a conflict between religion and evolution is that I am a Christian who believes in the literal truth of the Bible. The Bible is the literal word of God, and therefore, it must be entirely true. Evolution is false because the Bible explicitly tells how God created the various forms of life. Considering that the Bible says nothing about evolution, it follows then that there is a real conflict between religion and evolution and it is impossible to reconcile between the two. On an additional note, religion and science are meant to explain different phenomena. The reason attributed to this assertion is the fact that while science cannot define morality, religion is incapable of defining scientific truth.
However, I think that evolution is critical to an understanding of biology such that it should be required in schools. There are various reasons as to why it is important to teach evolution. First, evolution is the only real explanation in biology for the vastly different forms of life. As such, excluding evolution from science curricula deprives learners the scientific concept necessary for explaining the natural world. Another significant reason as to why it is crucial to teach evolution is that evolution is central to the advancement of medicine. In light of this, evolutionary medicine utilizes the principles of evolution not only to study but also treat human diseases. Therapies for combating pathogens, including influenza, utilize the concepts of adaptation and mutation. In brief, I believe that evolution is critical to an understanding of biology and removing it from the science classroom does not only undermine students’ understanding of how scientific knowledge is amassed but also deprives them of the fundamental tenet of biology and medicine.
