Growing up as a poor young person, DiAngelo also knew clearly that she was “not Black.” That distinction, of a racial Other, meant that they needed color people to clean and reorganize them with the controlling white culture that poverty robbed them.

Some of the classist messages she received when she was young include being told that she wasted resources and was dirty. These messages kept her silent because she was a lower class than the others. She had to keep this silence to herself.

DiAngelo offers two interwoven tasks for “Whites to unravel [their] internalized racial dominance”. That implies working on our own internalized oppression and face the internalized dominance that results from being socialized in a racist society

DiAngelo states that the “discourse of individuality” can benefit racial privilege but holds all oppressions in place in that if people can view themselves as individuals without being defined by social classifications such as race, wealth and class we would end up the places nature intends us to be with those at the top having risen under individual merit while those at the bottom held there due to individual insufficiency.

According to Gregory Mantsios, people in the United States find it difficult to talk about class because using class vocabulary crosses class boundaries and thus has been removed from the prevailing culture.

Mantsios distinguishes the categories of “myth” and “reality” in his essay by asking engaging in questions which reveal that many of the myths are not true based upon the questions

Mantsios uses the real life examples that show that people do not have the opportunities and necessities based on their race, gender, and class in efforts to show how class myths function

Daniel Patrick Moynihan argument about poverty in his infamous 1965 report, “The Negro Family: The Case for National Action”.

He claims that the black communities upheld values that encouraged many fatherless households which can be attributed to high rates of poverty and crime

Looking at historical data in regards to poverty rates reveals that economic declines contribute the high rates of poverty

According to Greenbaum, the cultural practices that cause recessions include bad behavior which is perpetuated by the wealthy and the powerful in the society. An example includes failure by greedy employers to adequately reimburse their workers.

According Gregory Mantsios, class is made invisible in that the economic disadvantaged who are associated with myriad problems are hidden from the general public

Specific examples that Mantsios gives of how media coverage misrepresents poor people and issues of poverty.

The media ignores the plight of the poor people who are the majority . The poor become statistics. When there is a story on the poor, it is only about bad things like making a profit or tax evaders. They say they only have themselves to blame, like becoming a single mother or addiction. They say it is about having bad luck. Issues reported by the media that relate to poverty include drug addiction, greedy panhandlers and welfare cheats among others.

The notion of “we-ness” developed by the media.

The media wants to connect to people that is both affluent and like-minded. They do not want the "other". Other meaning the underclass which makes it divided between underclass and everyone else.

The real consequence of media’s treatment of poverty and class is that those who own or direct the media are part of the upper class.
