Sexual Response Cycle entails a series of emotional processes, as well as physical that occurs when an individual is aroused for instance when one is engaged in sexually stimulating activities. It involves stimulation by one’s partner, masturbation, fantasy or oral sex and many other forms. It also involves penile-vaginal intercourse. Sexual response cycle occur when an individual follows from sexual desire to sexual satisfaction.

Sexual Response Phases

The sexual excitement, plateau, orgasm and resolution are the four major categorical phases that both males and females endure in sexual response. The first phase in sexual response cycle is the sexual excitement. It varies from one person to another. It generally entails increase in heart rate, breathing rate and rise in blood pressure in both males and females. The next phase which occurs prior to orgasm is plateau. It is experienced by both sexes as they increase their sexual stimulation as they set to satisfy themselves sexually. Orgasm though characterized by climatic pleasure is the shortest phase in sexual response cycle. It is the phase of maximum sexual pleasure which only lasts for several seconds. Resolution in which body parts return to normal or the original state is the last phase (William & Johnson, 2009).

Differences in Sexual Response Cycle between Males and Females

Various studies to assert how sexual response cycle occurs have been conducted. The findings suggest that there are several differences in male sexual response cycle as compared to females. Firstly, duration is the highest difference that occurs in males and for females; the argument is based on two issues; intensity and duration. Males observe erection only in excitement phase after a few seconds of sexual stimulation and which may be lost and regained repeatedly. On the other hand, females have to be very attentive for them to be excited for sexual desires. In female sexual excitement is triggered by various incidences like caressing, gentle kissing and soft touch on their sexual body parts. Alternatively, males are associated with ejaculation in orgasm phase, which lasts for a few seconds. On the other hand, females may experience orgasm several as long as sexual stimulation proceeds. For both sexes, sexual response cycle may differ according influenced by certain factors. For this reason, it is essential for partners to understand each other, talk where necessary for maximum sexual pleasure to both of them. Sexual satisfaction may be impacted by the differences that occur as asserted by Crooks and Baur (2013).

Similarities in Sexual Response Cycle between Males and Females

The first similarity occurs in excitement phase. At this stage, female breast enlarges, and vaginal lubrication begins to separate while in male, testes swell, and the scrotum tightens. This act as a paces setter for the next step where in males, penile hardens while in female the vaginal walls become ready for intercourse. Males ejaculate in orgasm phase, at the same time; females observe increase in vaginal lubrication as well as tightening of the vaginal walls. This brings an overall pleasure ( McAnulty & Burnette, 2011).

Conclusion

In conclusion, sexual cycle and response involve phases which at some at some point may differ from male to female or person to person while at other point, similarities are noted. The duration and intensity are the main difference in male and female. These differences may have an impact on the intensity of sexual pleasure. There are similarities as well that enable both male and females to experience maximum pleasure and occur in some sort of similar ways to trigger the next phase.
