It is remarkable progress to know that modern archeologists are still on their job to dig deep into what happened in the past. Notably, in this case, a case dating back in 1609 involving cannibalism in a colony was reconstructed to come up with a most likely event of what happened to a 14-year-old British girl in Virginia’s Jamestown Colony. This piece of work doesn’t change my view of early colonial settlements. This is because hardship in colonies was a typical phenomenon faced by the colonists. In many instances, the change in climate exposed them to diseases, starvation, language barrier, and also warfare among other harsh conditions. So, in the case that the colonists were faced by starvation during this winter period in Virginia’s Jamestown Colony sounds more of an expected situation in the foreign land. In most cases, colonies would be independent of supplies from England through engaging in social-economic activities to sustain their presence in America. However, in this case, the period was not favorable for any self-sustaining activities in the area, and the supply ship was lost in the sea, which made them consume anything available.
I do not find the evidence that Jamestown settlers resorted to cannibalism convincing. The only evidence presented was on the possibility that Jane was killed and feasted on by hungry colonists. In this case, there is also a possibility that she died from diseases and other factors just as the rest of the colonists who arrived in this area. The suggested Jane’s demise story also doesn’t sound convincing. From the reconstruction of the skull remains, they ruled out that some objects might have been used to kill her. However, the damages on the skull could also have been as a result of the extended period underneath caused by natural and human activities after dying from other possible causes.
