In the United States, nativism is seen in the opposition that some Americans citizens including the government are showing towards the immigrants. The immigrants, in this case, refer to Latinos, Muslims, Black Americans and other people who are from other countries. The nativist Americans feel that the immigrants should be prevented from going to the United States and those in the U.S ought to be deported back to their countries of origin. Additionally, they believe that the immigrants are intruding their space. They also consider them as inferior and treat them in inhumane ways because they are convinced that the immigrants are in the United States illegally. Some American leaders such as Donald Trump have also contributed to the spread of nativism by publicly declaring their opposition towards immigration (Ramos, 2016; Cassidy, 2016)

The major consequences of nativism are the spread of hate and fear among Americans. Nativism has lead to lack of tolerance in the United States to the extent that some people are attacking foreigners due to hatred. For instance, Jorge Ramos gives an account of a Somali woman who was attacked by an American citizen because she spoke Swahili instead of English. This hatred has formed the basis of other vices such as violence and killings targeting foreigners. Nativism has also facilitated to fear among immigrants and foreigners who are scared of deportation or being attacked by organized gangs (Ramos, 2016).

Anthropologists have put forward various concepts in an attempt to explain nativism. Firstly, it is described as a form of prejudice targeting people who are different from the majority regarding religion and other cultural factors. Secondly, nativism is an attempt by a particular group to protect its culture from intrusion. In this case, the foreign aspects such as religion are considered as a threat (Nativism: concept and meaning, n.d). Nativism can be eradicated through mass forums that seek to promote tolerance among people. The forums ought to be a combined effort by the governments, non-profit organization, and other stakeholders.
