The first third of Luke's text touches on different things with the center of it lying in the fact that Jesus is the savior. What stands in my mind in these chapters are the joyous moments. There is John the Baptist's birth, the birth of Jesus, Mary's song, and many other moments. The section that captivated my imagination happened during the temptation of Jesus in the desert. It was captivating how Jesus wisely used the scripture to answer the devil. The genealogy of Jesus reveals that he is indeed the son of God as it is rooted in Adam, who is God's son, as God created him. It reveals a lineage of great men who had great faith in God like Abraham, David, Solomon, and many others. The genealogy of Jesus in Mathew is more detailed. It gives information about the times these ancestors lived and also about some of the women related to Jesus. I believe the difference stems from the fact that Luke and Mathew wrote the message for different audiences. In Luke 4, Jesus shows a mastery of the Bible, affirming that the word can help one out of any situation. Jesus healed the sick to fulfill the prophecies that had been told about him by old testament prophets. Jesus could not be the one to teach about the Kingdom of God because he brought the Kingdom itself with him. By using the parable of the old and new wineskins, Jesus tried to make people understand that he and disciples served different times from that of John and disciples. The two groups served different purposes.
