Abortion is sometimes just and sometime unjust. It can be just if the life of the mother is at risk. In some cases, doctors can predict the poor health of a mother due to the pregnancy and thus, abortion is opted so as to prevent further health damages to the mother. Additionally, abortion can be justified if a pregnancy is as a result of a crime like rape, child abuse and incest. Many communities would not approve of such pregnancies therefore, abortion is always opted. Besides, the child being carried can have some complications that would affect him or her in living a quality life. Some of the complications include serious generic issues and mental defects. This can also be considered for abortion so as to prevent the child from suffering. Abortion can also be justified when the mother of the child seems too young to handle the pregnancy and the baby, and also due to poverty.

On the other hand, abortion is sometimes unjust. A situation where abortion is used as a substitute for birth control methods is unjust. For example, when a mother gets pregnant and decides to abort the pregnancy because she has many children and she does not need another, is an unjust abortion. Additionally, using abortion to control and manage the country’s population by any government is unjust abortion. Abortion being used to stop people with various genetic defects from having children is also very unjust. This was used in the past to prevent the growth of population of people with inferior genetics. It goes against the human rights. Some communities also use abortion to select gender, where if a fetus is suspected to be a particular unwanted gender, then abortion is induced. For example, a country like India has a problem with female feticides, where pregnancies are terminated when the fetus is determined as female. This is an unjust abortion. Therefore, it is clear that an abortion can sometimes be just and sometimes unjust.
