Kant's concept of the law of nature can be understood to imply a set of principles that guide the normal standard course of events so that things do not run out of control. For example, laziness is not allowed in the common order of things. However, if someone decides to be lazy and will that the entire universe does as he has done so that no one engages in meaningful labor, the course of events will get out of hands and therefore one would not desire such a thing. In this case, the law of nature is that people should labor to earn a living and improve their faculties.

Understanding the concept of the law of nature is important as it helps in solving complex situations. For example, one may be involved in debate whether to or not to engage in an activity. Applying the law of nature would help make an appropriate decision. When found under such circumstances debating with self whether to pursue a course of action, Kant suggests that one should consider if his choice of action were to be made a universal law what results would be obtained. If the result throws nature out of course then it cannot be moral.

Kant’s deontology has a practical application in ethics. The principle of the law of nature requires that we consider our actions from a universal perspective if we would things to be as we are contemplating to act. When considering actions from such a perspective, one would arrive at a moral or ethical conclusion. The universal consideration magnifies the intended act so that one is struck by the morality or immorality of an act. Kant argues that understanding the real principle behind an action may be difficult as there are possibilities of other motives lurking deep far from scrutiny influencing our motives. Therefore, if left to act alone without putting other people and factors into consideration, we may make decisions and act in selfish ways; these can be put in check through the law of nature and strict adherence to the principle would help us act ethically.
