Introduction

LGBTQ is arguably one of the most controversial issues of the contemporary society. There have been both proponents and opponents of this component, with the latter citing religious intrusion. In the course of this analysis, I will discuss LGBTQ and why it is important to me and to the society. I will also seek to cover various movie narratives, genre or mix of genres with associated conventions, apply film theory, cinematography, editing and sound with music. I will then discuss what the viewers of each team are expected to learn regarding its content as it pertains to humanity or society today in America by attending the LGBTQ festival. 

Why this festival theme is important to me (or society) 

I chose LGBTQ because it is a debatable issue that often seeks to be addressed in the modern world. It is apparent that in most societies, a world-wide the concept of LGBTQ has not yet been acclaimed. A lot of condemnation has resulted from this and more often than not, people who come out as members of the LGBTQ society often experience rejection and torment ( Shelton, 2015 ). In the western society, however, despite the denunciation of LGBTQ by various religious domains, individuals are slowly learning to embrace people affiliated to this group of individuals. This festival will manage to further educate the viewers regarding what the LGBTQ society go through in the course of their lives as they seek to fit in.

Overview

The following three films will serve as the main event and I explain how each film relates to the theme. I chose Moonlight, a 2016 film directed by Barry Jenkins, Princess Cyd, a 2017 movie whose director is So Young Kim and But I am a Cheerleader released in 1999, and which has been directed by Jamie Babbit. 

In my justification below, I chose to use specific scenes that relate to the theme instead of providing a general overview of the plot or recap of the story line for each of the movies. In addition, I will consider the following elements which I selected for the theme: narrative, genres, film theory, cinematography, editing, and sound with music. 

Film 1 Moonlight

One of the scenes that justify the choice of this film occurs where Chiron categorically asks Juan what a “faggot” is (Romanski et al., 2016). He is told that it is a term used to humiliate gay people. This shows that he is already struggling with his identity and he is trying to protect himself from being judged. During the same scene he can be seen looking down which is a means of depicting the shame associated with being gay. Also, in another scene, Juan confronts Paula, Chiron`s mother for neglecting her gay son and she responds by asking if he was going to keep someone who rots. This alone shows the disdain within which members of the LGBTQ community are held. 

Narrative

The narrative for this film is on Chiron`s journey of self-actualization (Romanski et al., 2016). As a young boy, he is demeaned and forced to endure tormenting moments as a result of being gay. When he finally learns to embrace his identity, life becomes easier for him. 

Genre

The genre is drama. There are a lot of dramatic twists in the course of this film. Most importantly, each bit of the experiences by the main character Chiron exemplify the life of a gay individual. 

Film theory

The film theory that matches the film`s style is that pertaining to character and environment. It is more about how someone is perceived and also what the environment forces them to be. 

Cinematography

The cinematography in this film which was developed by James Laxton is more of an artistic nature with personal aesthetics depicting actual realism. 

Editing

The editing includes an opportunity to move in between different scenes in a bid to ensure that they produce viable content for the intended purpose.

Sound and music

The diegetic sound was taken from a Blaxploitation film produced in the 70s, and the non-diegetic sound depicts a sense of terror in some of the scenes (Romanski et al., 2016). This music is used mostly to depict how the concept of LGBTQ is viewed, particularly in the African-American community. 

Film 2 Princess Cyd

The justification for including this film include the scene where Cyd confesses her feelings towards Katie to her aunt. Surprisingly, Cyd`s aunt Miranda appears unperturbed by the idea (Cone, Hahn & Hart, 2017). A second scene emerges where Miranda tells Cyd that it is not a handicap to have one thing but not the other (Cone, Hahn & Hart, 2017). She is insinuating that one is free to choose what they want. 

Narrative

The narrative of this story is based on a 16 year old girl, Cyd who is eager to explore another side of life or sexual ideology in the quest for knowledge (Cone, Hahn & Hart, 2017). 

Genre

The genre is both dram and romance.

Film theory

The film theory which matches this film`s style is based on Cyd, a young lady who is open about her thoughts and emotions, and is not afraid to speak out. 

Cinematography

The cinematography in this film is lush with a sense of patience in storytelling thus making the idea of coming of age an inexcusable delight. 

Editing

The editing includes distinguishing between aspects that are likely to result in clashes between adults and youth. 

Sound and music

The diegetic sound is one of sadness in the initial scenes when a 911 call is received revealing that some people in a house have passed away, and the non-diegetic sound depicts a sense of cheerfulness exhibited by Cyd despite the troubling experiences she has been through (Cone, Hahn & Hart, 2017).

Film 3 But I am a Cheerleader

One of the scenes that justifies the selection of this films is where Megan arrives at the rehabilitation camp and every other person introduces themselves as homosexuals (Creel, Sprerling & Babbit., 1999). Secondly, another scene that offers justification is the one where one of the male students at the camp is told to lean in and kiss another girl; all in a bid to change them. 

Narrative

The narrative for this film is based on Megan a 17 year old God fearing girl who is sent to rehabilitation camp after her parents suspect that she is a homosexual (Creel, Sprerling & Babbit., 1999). 

Genre 

The genre is both comedy drama

Film theory

The film theory which matches this film`s style regards Megan whose parents are convinced is a lesbian. Also the drama that envelopes in the course of the film serves to show that it is impossible to change one`s sexual orientation.

Cinematography

The cinematography in this film is an exhibition of beautiful shots which serve the purpose of bringing out the amusement to the audience. 

Editing

The editing includes the incorporation of the most common elements of homosexuality between both genders. 

Sound and music

The diegetic sound depicts the irony that homosexual individuals can be cured, and the non-diegetic sound is used to make the film interesting to the viewer. 

What the Film Festival viewers will learn about film by attending this festival 

The film festival viewers will learn about and be exposed to LBGQT. This theme is important to me because I feel that it is the high time that all people are viewed equally, irrespective of their sexual affiliation. It is also important to the society since by viewing the films they get to understand the challenges experienced by individuals who have been neglected and condemned by others in the community. 

Conclusion 

Finally, it is apparent that LGBTQ is indeed an argumentative issue in the society which should be approached with caution. Individuals belonging to the aforementioned community end up enduring moments of torture as they seek to hide their identity for fear of denunciation. There is a lot that people are bound to learn from such experiences including the idea of treating all people equally. In the end all that matters is that all individuals in society are able to coexist peacefully with one another.
