In the sports industry, there is no absolute definition of who a leader is because it takes different personalities as well as qualities. However, being in leadership requires gradual premeditated development by setting examples to the rest of the team, having self-awareness and prioritizing the team’s goals. This differs from being a sports manager who is a person in charge of the business aspects of individual athletes and the entire team. Apart from that, a sports manager needs to meet some set requirements in order to be appointed for the job (Bertocci, 2009). Traditionally, having the ultimate goal in mind, sports leaders have been patient and consistent in their quest for long-term glory whereas the managers have been doing the correct thing in order to produce results at the end of the day. As an illustration, Richie McCaw is a leader in the rugby fraternity having captained the All-blacks since the year 2004 till his retirement in 2015. This made him the most capped rugby player of all time and a key pillar to the consistent success of the New Zealand rugby team. Johan ‘Rassie’ Erasmus, the current head coach as well as manager of the South African rugby team, has been at the helm of the managerial job since February 2018 spearheading the team to win the rugby championship this year.

Ethical dilemma occurs when there is a struggle between vital values, and in sports, some of these notable dilemmas include the use of banned steroids and misconduct of players (Mullane, 2009). When faced with ethical dilemmas, sports leaders and managers take immediate action. This may include the dropping of a key player from the squad involved in any illegalities. This is exemplified by the case of Aphiwe Dyanti who was dropped from the Springboks team due to doping allegations.
