Management, leadership, and followership abilities are integral to the nursing profession. The skills are vital in enabling nurses to adapt to various work settings and realize the set objectives. The varying roles of managers, leaders and followers assist in meeting the various needs of the organization. However, the three roles and responsibilities are conducted by the same person.

Personal Definition and Vision of Leadership, Followership, and Management

Leadership refers to the process of providing guidance to followers to achieve set goals and performance. Leadership requires the development of a clear vision that predetermines the future of the organization. Effective leadership can be obtained by inspiring and empowerment of employees to bring the best out of them. The development of a clear vision keeps the team committed and focused on the accomplishment of the set goals (Yoder-Wise, n.d., p. 41) . Clear vision can be enhanced through effective communication that empowers followers.

Application of a Theory from Yoder-Wise Textbook

Trait theory explains the various qualities of a successful leader. Leaders exhibit certain physical and emotional attributes that play an integral part in inspiring and empowering employees including integrity, honesty, creativity and higher drive to achieve (Yoder-Wise, n.d., p. 9). Such values can be applied in the nursing practice by having task knowledge and integrity in my practices, for example, being accountable for the actions and possess a strong sense of consistency in my practices.

Leadership with Followership Characteristics Applied

The integration of integrity and communication assists in creating clear goals and expectations. For example, the developing of social skills like responsibility and communication fosters teamwork in the organization that leads to a positive change in the work setting. Effective communication ensures that each person is aware of organizational expectations thus stay on the right course.

In conclusion, leadership is necessary in the success of nursing professionals. Communication allows people in the organization to have clear tasks, collaborate and work towards the attainment of the set goals. The nursing shortage can be addressed through effective leadership skills like integrity, honesty, responsibility and empowerment.
