Effective listening skills are essential in the communication process, most especially during leadership. Any leader is required to have good listening skills as well as good communication skills. However; to acquire some good communication skills, practising good listening skills is essential (Weger, Bell, Minei & Robinson, 2014). The leadership self-assessment test 6-1 was critical as it examines and measures ones listening skills and shows the areas that need improvement. Moreover, the self-assessment 6-1 is important as it helps to reflect one’s listening skills in a deeper level besides just knowing the measure of the skills. I scored 70, which is almost at the highest score of 75, which was pretty good. I was not surprised by this score. However, even with my high score in my listening skills measure, I have realized that there are areas that I need to work on.
The leadership assessment test has accurately described my listening skills according to my leadership style. According to the assessment test, it is true that I do not always have direct conversations and questions to the other person. I do not ask direct questions to get correct answers always but sometimes. This limits me to get the answers I deserve to know as the other person may get my questions wrong. Sometimes I give out many stories just to get to a simple direct point later confusing understanding. I believe that as a leader, the conversations, questions and answers should be straight to the point and no beating around the bush to get to the point (Weger, Bell, Minei & Robinson, 2014). This helps the leader to be more accurate and get the correct and full response from others as well as it is time-saving (Weger, Bell, Minei & Robinson, 2014). Therefore the Leadership Self-Assessment test was necessary in acquiring our leadership skills as it helps us know ourselves in the area of listening and communication. It also helps in determining our weaknesses in these areas and the areas that need improvement.
