Nurses are essential in health institutions, and they make up the largest percentage of health care providers in these institutions. However, the percentage of the turnover of nurses in health institutions is growing day by day, causing the quality of services offered in these institutions to decrease (Roche et al., 2015). Nurse turnover is a huge problem in the health care sector around the globe. Therefore, solutions have to be created to avoid a huge number of nurses quitting positions. This huge percentage of nurse turnover can be solved by implementing effective strategies to retain nurses.

Nurse leadership plays an important role in recruiting and retaining nurses. Nurse leaders, being the head of all nurses in a particular institution or unit, need to carefully recruit nurses with qualities that match with nursing services required at their institution (Roche et al., 2015). Nurses have to strategize on the criteria to recruit nurses since this later affects the retention of nurses. If nurses with the best qualities are recruited, they form a good teamwork and nursing unit, creating a good working environment; thus, retention of nurses becomes easier (Roche et al., 2015).

Moreover, nurse leaders should ensure that nurses can access resources in their workplaces since having good resources and equipment enable nurses to perform their work well (Roche et al., 2015). This results in low nurse turnover. In addition, nurse leaders need to recognize the best nurses and rewards them as this motivates the nurses in their work. Giving appraisal to nurses and recognizing their work makes nurses feel comfortable as well as motivates them. It makes nurses feel rejuvenated in their workplaces; hence quitting becomes less of thought to them. Therefore nurse leaders play a critical role in the retention of nurses.

A supportive work environment improves nurse satisfaction in a health institution. Thus, the quality of the output is high. When nurse leaders create a warm relationship with other nurses, open conversations are created, making it easier for nurses to express themselves without fear of retaliation (Roche et al., 2015). Furthermore, good relations in the workplace results in a good work team; thus, nurses feel satisfied in their workplace. Another factor is that when nurse leaders support their opinions and respect the nurses’ suggestions, as well as acting to their requests, it improves the nurses’ satisfaction.

In conclusion, nurse leaders not only plays a critical role in recruiting and retention of nurses; they also have a massive influence on nurse satisfaction. It is because they are the determinants of a positive working environment through their leadership skills and knowledge.
