Providing leadership in an organization is among the most challenging tasks but when given the right approach can be less challenging and yield the desired outcomes. Leadership requires establishing a clear organization vision that is shared among followers in a way that they follow willingly. Leaders are expected to undertake careful planning, organizing, as well as controlling to ensure that an organization achieves its set objectives.

The Morning Star Story 

The Morning Star is a tomato processor that has grown to become among the top self-managing organizations and to create a niche for itself as the best and most efficient tomato processor. Of interest is the strategy formulation that the company has adopted.

Planning 

While undertaking his strategy formulation, the company leader challenged the hierarchical approach to planning and management (Monk & Wagner 2013). The approach of self-management in business makes it easy for the employees to gain adequate control of their work.

The Morning Star aims at retaining its employees by giving them autonomous control of their activities. The fact that employees forge their own agreements without a supervisor creates fluidity in the organization and reduces the chances of employee attrition. Secondly, the organization aims at long-term profitability through a cost reduction system where top management team that accounts for considerable recurrent expenditures in salaries. Additionally, a competitive environment is another objective of the Morning Star. However, the difference in the competition at the organization and industry competition is the fact that employees are competing to create impact.

Organization 

According to Wilson (2017), strategy implementation is crucial in an organization since it forms the foundation on which the company objectives are implemented. The Morning Star makes its mission statement the boss thus making it easy for the employees to draw out the roles they will play in achieving the company objectives. Also, empowering everyone is an organizing strategy adopted to ensure that all employees have the capacity and needed resources to implement company objectives. Adopting a self-management where there are no managers but the work force is responsible for all activities including recruiting in the organization is another strategy adopted by the Morning Star. The company works by providing its employees with free freedom raising their enthusiasm to do better and achieve more. Additionally, provision of clear targets and transparent data works as a strategy that the Morning Star rides that emphasizes the need for colleagues to hold each other responsible as well as accountable for results.

Leadership 

Making employees responsible for negotiating work deals with each other is a leadership role that is bestowed by the Morning Star on its workforce. The arrangements make it possible for colleagues to come to an amicable agreement on all actions that affect their working relationships. Additionally, providing a platform where employees can resolve their conflicts in the absence of a manager shows the leadership authority the employees have in their respective working units (Leonard, Trusty & Hilgert 2016). The tomato processor empowers its workforce to make important spending decisions through calculations and consultation.

Controlling 

Controlling in an organization is a crucial factor in realizing company objectives in the short run as well as the long run (Wilson, 2017). Ensuring that employees consult with peers before making a decision forms the core of Morning Star’s controlling framework in addition to having a useful peer review where colleagues give feedback to different units with an expectation that the unit will adequately defend its actions. Forging working agreements additionally work as a control initiative since holding negotiations help prevent unsound decisions that would happen if parties were acting unilaterally.

Tasty Catering has an intense planning mechanism that is achieved by empowering employees to scan all available growth opportunities. The company has an internal finance company that is responsible for financing potential growth opportunities in addition to having a supplier and tracking company responsible for product distribution.

Organizing 

Organizing at Tasty Company forms a pivotal business component where employees are encouraged to comb the environment for profitable ventures in which the organization invests. Adopting disruptions in the organization form the basis for which changes are brought in the company to create a better organization. Available resources are harnessed to meet immediate company requirements such as using trucks as billboards to advertise company products. Internal cash flow is harnessed to fund disruptions and new growth opportunities with the company management encouraging employees to make business plans for new ventures.

Leadership 

Employees at Tasty Company are empowered such that they become leaders in the ideas they have developing to see them succeed. All employees are viewed as equally capable of recognizing market niches that have the ability to create profitable revenue in an attempt to grow the organization. Employees are continuously made to own business knowledge at Tasty’s by engaging employees in reviews ensuring.

Controlling 

Several measures are put in place to control the organization’s operations. First, Tasty Catering requires a business plan for a new growth opportunity before investing in an idea. Having a business plan helps an organization ensure that accurate planning is done as well as seal possible loopholes that may lead to business failure. Additionally, continuous business reviews are undertaken to view the successes, failures, and areas of improvement that the organization can make to ensure continued growth. As a control measure, all company activities are visible for everyone building a chance where possible failures are identified at an early stage preventing business failure (Chartered Institute of Management Accountants, 2014).

HCL Technologies 

Planning 

HCL Technologies values planning as an integral part of proper organization functioning as it major business assumption. The organization carefully plans its resources especially the human resources to foster the company’s growth and innovation. The leader aims at creating trust in employees, transforming the organization in terms of empowering employees. Also, the leader aims at creating a transformation through innovations.

Organization 

The success of a company’s planning is highly dependent on its ability to organize available resources in a way that ensures optimum utilization (Burrow, Kleindi & Becraft, 2017). The team at HCL Technologies is organized to accomplish the tasks that another company deems impossible. The organization is democratized to make employees feel they own the company with a defined vision for the future that inspires people to accomplish their duties. Additionally, HCL Technologies gives its employees the freedom to do what they want to do in innovating thus ensuring constant growth. The company has created unhappiness with today ensuring that employees will churn ideas to come up with the desired outcomes.

Leadership 

HCL Technologies provides an explicit leadership with the organization's top management winning the trust of employees. Building trust in the workplace increases productivity improves morale and makes it possible for effective team working in an organization. Trust reduces the time taken to make key decisions given that the individual employees believe in their colleagues’ expertise and judgment. HCL provides a platform upon which employees transform innovations. Finally, the organization seeks to empower its employees such that they feel a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction. Empowered human resource tends to be more creative in addition to being loyal to their employers.

Controlling 

Controlling encompasses a company’s integral play in ensuring that its resources are utilized according to the planning and organization undertaken in the company (Appannaiah, Reddy & Ananthan, 2015). With such knowledge, HCL has established standards that control the working structure of its employees. Standards act as benchmarks for performance clearly showing points of improvement and those that are properly working. The technologies company stimulates actions among employees by empowering them to transform the organization through believing in the challenges. Finally, HCL focuses on results to encourage desirable working behavior among employees.

Gore and Associates 

Planning 

Gore and Associates challenge the assumption of public companies excelling in a competitive global market. Gore and Associates hold the belief that private ownership acts to reinforce a company's culture when assessing business conditions. The company has set out to become a continuously growing company that is accountable and autonomous in its operations. Leaders at Gore and Associates aim at building an organization by supporting employees while providing a forum for commitment seeking to build business collaboration with its associates.

Organization 

According to Wilson (2017), a well thought out and strategic business configuration clearly defines and supports the operational basis of any organization resulting in an efficient and effective work process flow. Gore and associates have clearly shown this through their commitment that help drives the business through collaboration and building connections without being limited by the traditional hierarchy of reporting relationships. Limiting traditional hierachy gives Gore and associates the freedom to embolden and assist each other’s growth and development. Therefore this creates an environment which enables Gore and Associates to bring unique strengths and different ways of solving problems and together achieve the organizational the objectives. The organization structure creates an environment that favor’s the development of this company.

Leadership 

Leadership is of paramount importance in management as it helps the organization maximize efficiency and also achieve the organizational goals. Gore and Associates have proven this by having the most advanced collaborative leadership system. It relies heavily on teamwork in all its operations thus helping the organization to develop a team of high performing leaders. Gore and associates also view and treats everyone as a leader. They believe that leadership is spread and it emerges from anyone who has the requisite experience and expertise that is needed by Gores ever developing a team of professionals. Therefore for Gore and Associate’s everyone is a leader. As a result of this Culture there is no direct supervision, and therefore the employees are able to work under minimal supervision thus creating a motivating effect on these employees.

Controlling 

Controlling is a managerial function that aims at making sure that all activities in an organization are performed according to the set work plan so as to achieve the set organizational objectives and also ensure efficient and effective use of all resources directed at achieving these objectives (Monk & Wagner, 2013). Gore and Associate's believes in a work culture that is heavily reliant on self-management in a way that each associate prioritize his time to deliver on projects he is committed to. Therefore Gore and associates rely heavily on teamwork and personal initiative in all its operations. In this system, there is no set chain of command or predetermined channels of communication. Therefore Gore and associates use a self-governing management system so as to encourage hands-on innovation and involve employees closest to the project the ability to make major decisions

Conclusion 

Management in any business is about making things happen. Leadership is about achieving goals by creating a sense of direction for an organization and motivating the employees to take the initiative and make the right decisions. The organization also needs to inspire, lead and empower the employees while motivating and influencing them. Employees should also be able to take on a leadership role and help to establish the organization in the long run. Therefore with proper and effective managerial practice and setting a positive organizational culture, the employees are likely to acquire the skills necessary to lead themselves and also lead the others.
