There is no doubt that technology has evolved how individuals communicate with family and friends. Until a decade ago, the most common method of communication between family and friends was face to face interaction but now there are numerous ways of communication such as text messages, emails and blogs. In recent times, these methods are widely utilized by as a main method of communication between family and friends. Parents often use text messages to communicate with their children and vice versa. Adults use online services such as Skype to communicate with their parents from miles away while friends keep in touch with each other using online social platforms. Technology has enhanced conversations between family and friends since it has enabled individuals establish meaningful relationships by allowing them to easily share texts, music, videos, and photos. Technology has helped lessen loneliness by enabling individuals to have conversations through platforms such as Skype and video calls. For instance, a college student could always talk to the parents back at home using Skype hence reducing loneliness. Individuals with busy schedules often find that technology provides a convenient method to have conversations with family and friends. Ultimately, technology has provided a convenient method to have conversations with friends and family.

Technology has definitely been helpful in maintaining relationships with family and friends due to its convenience, however it could also be argued that conversations occurring through online platforms are often less meaningful. Technology is helpful in maintaining a relationship with a family member or friend especially if they do not live in the same vicinity. When people move away it is often difficult to maintain a relationship however online platforms make it possible to have conversations all day. Establishing closer relationships often involves sharing personal information such as dislikes, likes and concerns. Some individuals find this difficult in a face-to-face interaction situation so the distance provided by communicating online is invaluable. Technology can also be destructive since it denies individuals the pleasure of face-to-face interaction; such interaction often encourages sharing of emotions as compared to conversations on the internet. Spending too much time on the internet talking to friends and family members might be helpful for such relationships but destroy relationships with the people around us. Communication that often occurs over the internet tends to be meaningless and makes less sense to older generations.

Conversations conducted on the internet are often short and therefore are not effective in delivering emotional messages. Personally I find it difficult to convey emotion through platforms such as text messages and social media messages. With typing as the main form of communication it is often convenient to use abbreviations; when someone uses an abbreviation such as Laughing Out Loud (LOL) it is difficult to decode whether an individual is genuinely happy or sarcastic. Communicating through the internet does not often feel like a proper interaction since it is difficult to gauge facial expressions, a key technique to read emotions. When communication through text messages and social media it is common to misinterpret some information. Text messages are often short and we cannot help but fill in the gaps with the information we have and so we put ourselves in the situation the text is describing. Such situations often lead to misinterpretation of emotional messages.

It is clear that technology has significantly evolved how we communicate with friends and family. Advanced technology has enabled the invention of platforms such as text messaging, Skype, and social media hence making it easier to communicate throughout the day and it is particularly important in long-distant situations. Technology has helped strengthen relationships through constant communication. Online platforms make it possible for individuals who find it difficult to conduct face-to-face interactions to maintain contact with family members and friends. Conversations that occur over online platforms are often meaningless hence making it difficult to connect and share emotions. It is often difficult to convey emotional messages through online platforms.
