William Jefferson favored Lewis in his pursuit of the expeditions that he undertook. In addition to soldiers and other colleagues that he required for this journey, he appointed Clark as his co-captain and partner. The convoy sustained their lives through trading tools with American Indians. Ironically, towards the end of the expedition, Lewis was 35 years old and on the verge of ruin. Upon his sudden death, Jefferson secured his claim of the American continent and forged amicable friendships with the American Indians that Lewis and Clark had been commissioned to take.
