William Jefferson favored Lewis in his pursuit of the expeditions that he undertook. In addition to soldiers and other colleagues that he required for this journey, he appointed Clark as his co-captain and partner. Merriweather Lewis and William Clark are probably the most famous explorers in America today, due to their ability to identify the right set of men to accompany them and undertake training and expertise for planning some of the most famous expeditions in history during the 1800’s. The duo created maps and images that are still referred to today after their voyage. Lewis and Clark began their journey in 1804 from Missouri during May. The party of explorers had to endure the unrelenting forces of nature, despite the expertise of some of the men accompanying the entire group of men, in addition to wildlife and the ever-present danger of disease.
The journey was arduous due to the familiar but inaccessible terrain as Lewis and Clark endeavored to meet the Indians and understand the diplomatic new world that they were tasked to report on. That was not a simple process because of the cultural implications that were attached to each of the actions that Lewis and Clark began. American Indians and Lewis and Clark had a short period to learn as much about each other. Guides and interpreters were invaluable in the process of acquiring horses for transport and take the correct routes, especially during the winter as they chartered the problematic western terrain far away from Saint Lewis. The convoy of 33 explorers needed to learn more about linen trade and the way of like of shrewd Chinook Indians, who lived slightly different from their non-trading but equally ingenuous counterparts. The convoy sustained their lives through trading tools with American Indians. Ironically, towards the end of the expedition, Lewis was 35 years old and on the verge of ruin. Upon his sudden death, Jefferson secured his claim of the American continent and forged amicable friendships with the American Indians that Lewis and Clark had been commissioned to take.
