Liberty Challenged in Nineteenth Century America Final Paper

The South laid special emphasis on the slave culture that perceived slaves as an integral part of the economy, although they got no social, legal or economic equity.

Outcomes of the 3/5 compromise

The three-fifths compromise helped the slave owners in the south to have more seats in the Electoral College and in the House of Representatives. This meant the South had more political power and control in Presidential elections. The compromise also affected the tax allocation since taxes were levied on land. This meant that in a situation where a slave owner and a non-slave owner owned a parcel of land similar in size, the slave owner would pay less tax ("Three Fifths Compromise - constitution | Laws.com", 2019).

Outcomes of the Missouri compromise of 1820

The effect of the Missouri compromise was the admission of Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. Also, slavery was abolished in the Louisiana Purchase lands north of the latitude 36°30’ ("Research Guides: Missouri Compromise: Primary Documents in American History: Introduction", 2019).

The compromise of 1850

The 1850 compromise served to further the cause of peace that was initiated by the Missouri compromise. The compromise allowed the acceptance of California as a free state while concurrently banning slave trade in Washington but allowing the practice to go on ("Effects and Significance", 2019).

The Kansas Nebraska act

The Kansas Nebraska act gave individual states the liberty to decide whether or not they wanted slavery in their territory. The act also repealed the 1820 Missouri compromise.

Outcomes of the Dread Scott decision

The Dread Scott decision went to shed light on the rights and citizenship of slaves in the antebellum. Furthermore, the decision went to begin the abolitionist campaign to end slavery. This also caused the South to resent the anti-slavery abolitionists who they saw as an enemy to their cause.

Reasons why slavery is incompatible with the economic and political system

Slavery was a form of capital investment, since a capital good was acquired and returns were expected. Slavery was hindering capitalism due to the reducing of returns with time. The price used to acquire slaves would need to consistently translate into profits long term. If the number of slaves was increasing, then farm land would be depleted, making it an unwise investment unless the owners had a really large plantation, which was not always the case ( Being Libertarian, 2019) . Similarly, in the case that an owner had a large enough tract of land, the workforce needed to supervise the slaves would also have to be increased. This is also because slaves often revolted and security personnel were needed. Slavery also discouraged the diversification of labor and, since slave towns had to be monitored for escapees, it also limited the development of some areas.

Driving forces that led to the Civil War

Difference in opinion of how much power the states should have against what the federal government should have.

The rise of abolitionists and the fear of losing slaves by the South.

Continuous expansion of the Union and the disagreements about power balance between the North and the South offset by the new members ("Causes Of The Civil War | History Detectives | PBS", 2019).

Bleeding Kansas which was a result of the Kansas Nebraska Act.
